Route description

This Monastery Trail forest crossing begins on the Varishpelda side of Lake Vodlozero and heads north through taiga and across the Gauzha River towards Novguda. The corridor belongs to an old water-and-portage route used for transporting White Sea salt and travelling to northern monasteries. Today, woodland, the lake shore and demanding wet ground shape the experience. Some sections are boggy and overgrown: allow a full walking day. This version ends in forest east of the Novguda accommodation complex. Agree the onward approach to a house, water meeting and return with the park beforehand. A visit permit is required.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainДанные по набору высоты уточняются.
SurfaceТип покрытия пока не определён.
Риски Soft boggy ground and thick undergrowth can considerably slow progress. Ask park staff about the Gauzha crossing and water level before setting out; a usable ford or operating bridge is unconfirmed. The forest finish remains away from Novguda’s houses, so an agreed safe approach still follows. Boardwalks and signs planned during 2026 do not establish completed infrastructure throughout the route.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 4 h 53 min
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
Allow a separate walking day for the forest crossing. Complete duration including water access and the exit to a meeting is not established. Agree pace, the Gauzha crossing and the onward path from the forest finish with the park. Book any Novguda overnight stay in advance; an informal tent stop outside a permitted place is prohibited.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Choose a period when the trail is open and agreed, with acceptable water levels. Dry weather makes boggy sections easier; rain and autumn wetness add difficulty. Confirm October passability and water access with the park. Summer insects require protection.
