Route description

The Tusheti paths between Omalo, Dochu and Khakhabo introduce the Khiso Alazani and Tushetis Alazani valleys. Attention moves between houses raised above the slopes and the river below. Dochu deserves an unhurried look: balconies and several-storey houses make the small settlement part of the mountain landscape rather than merely a place to sleep. The previous crossing cannot currently be planned as freely passable. The route author’s 2026 update reports that the Omalo–Khakhabo bridge remains destroyed; the Dochu crossing also requires checking. First agree a safe, functioning alternative with the Tusheti administration. Without that confirmation, postpone the through-trek and choose separate accessible walks around the villages. This landscape deserves patient exploration once the river crossings have been resolved.

SurfaceDirt 17%, Dirt / grass 16%, Compacted dirt 1%, Unknown 65%.
Риски The Omalo–Khakhabo bridge is destroyed and restoration is unconfirmed in the 2026 update. Do not attempt an independent ford: the author warns of difficult water and steep banks. The Dochu footbridge is also mapped as destroyed. Check crossings, wet grassy slopes and steep paths locally; the absence of a safe solution is a reason to abandon the through-trek.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 1 d 6 h
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
After confirming a safe alternative, allow several trekking days with agreed overnight places. Choose a connected sequence of villages and allocate separate time for transfers or diversions. The two-day schedule for a shorter Omalo–Dochu outing does not cover every path in this itinerary.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Summer and early autumn while the Tusheti road is open. The season does not solve the destroyed-bridge problem. Obtain information about functioning crossings first, then choose settled dry weather and reassess after heavy rain.
