Route description

This walk begins beside Old Diklo and leads through the Shenako area towards Omalo. The ruins on their rocky spur establish the mood before the longer journey: it is easy to understand why this position was chosen for the old settlement. Farther on, attention shifts to meadows, pine-covered slopes and the Pirikitis Alazani valley. Slow down around Shenako to see how its stone houses fit the hillside. Saint George’s Church can be visited on a separate detour before returning to the main path. Omalo completes the journey with the feeling of reaching Tusheti’s inhabited centre again. Agree transport to Diklo and accommodation or departure from Omalo beforehand, so dusk does not become a search for a ride. Check access to Old Diklo with the border authorities before setting out.
