Route description

From Trenta, this expanded walking version follows the Soča towards Bovec. The river alternates between forest-path surroundings and the confined rock walls of the Small and Great Gorges. Crossings change banks and reveal different sides of the valley. A separate branch reaches the Lepenjica, while the lower route crosses the Koritnica and passes the exterior of the Church of the Virgin Mary in the Field before Bovec. Several returns lengthen the usual river stage. Check access to the chosen bridges and Lepena paths before planning the complete outing.

Route at a glance

Главное за минуту
Discover the Soča through its banks and rock troughs beyond the view from the road. The Great Gorge is particularly striking where water disappears between close walls, while lower river crossings change the atmosphere before Bovec. The church exterior near the finish adds a quiet cultural stop to a substantial riverside day.

Nearby

Trenta’s information centre and museum require a separate visit near the departure. The Soča–Koritnica confluence, Za Otoki fortifications and Bovec museum have their own approaches beyond the selected path. The Soča source and Juliana Botanical Garden lie above this outing’s start. River boating is a separate programme with its own access arrangements and conditions.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Summer services connect Trenta and Bovec, but the published 2026 calendars end in September. Check a specific autumn connection or prearrange a transfer between the road endpoints. Avoid planning a return using an arbitrary departure from an old summer timetable. Separate Trenta and Bovec endpoints allow different accommodation choices when transport has been arranged.
By car
Reach Trenta by the Soča Valley road and organise the return from Bovec before walking. The endpoints lie in different settlements. Keep vehicles off riverside walking paths and avoid blocking campsite entrances. Check current road restrictions when arriving through Vršič.
Parking
Parking at the selected departure and finish is unconfirmed. Use only explicitly authorised spaces and check the permitted stay before a long outing. Free access to the Soča Trail does not establish free parking or permission to leave a vehicle at a campsite. Arrange your return location and Bovec transfer in advance.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 761 м.
SurfaceDirt 45%, Asphalt 15%, Gravel 9%, Unknown 23%.
Риски The long walk includes short steep and narrow bankside passages, where wet stones and roots need care. Obey bridge restrictions and closure signs. The park reports works on individual Lepena paths and bridges in2026; clarify access to the selected branch before the complete crossing. Supervise children beside river drops and keep dogs on a lead. Avoid descending into deep troughs for swimming or photographs.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 9 h 11 min
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
With accessible crossings and dry paths, allow an estimated full daylight outing of around9–11hours including stops. This estimates the expanded version with returns rather than the standard stage. Start early and confirm the Lepena branches first. Carry food and water for your own breaks; seasonal campsites and cafés do not establish services along the entire walk.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Prefer snow-free days with settled weather and sufficient daylight. After heavy rain, check bridge and bank-path conditions and river levels first. Summer offers changing forest shade and open banks; autumn makes an early start and prearranged return more important. River-path access and seasonal bus operation require separate checks.
