Route description

From Triglav Lakes Hut, the twelfth stage of the Julius Kugy Alpine Trail crosses the Komna uplands towards Bogatin Saddle. Beyond the pass, the path gradually reaches Krn Lake, whose quiet shore provides a pause before the main ascent. The outing then becomes more demanding as rocky slopes lead to Krnska Škrbina and Gomiščkovo Shelter below Krn. A memorial plaque at the saddle recalls the military history of these beautiful mountains. The stage ends at the shelter; visiting the summit and descending afterwards require separate plans.

Route at a glance

Главное за минуту
Link the Triglav lake district with Krn’s mountain surroundings on a substantial crossing. The stage combines two distinct experiences: a leisurely pause beside a glacial lake and a demanding upper ascent to the shelter. Its pass, lake and memorial plaque introduce a part of the Julian Alps where the natural landscape meets traces of the past.

Nearby

Krn’s summit rises above the finishing shelter and needs a separate ascent. The hut below Bogatin and underground fortifications near Bogatin Saddle require their own approaches and access checks. Savica Waterfall belongs to a lower Bohinj visit beyond this mountain stage. Open Komna Lodge can help form a different overnight plan, with its visit added separately.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Arrange arrival in Bohinj and Ukanc before the separate ascent to the high departure. The published 2026 summer bus calendar to Savica ended in August; check autumn services afresh. From Gomiščkovo Shelter, an independent descent to the road and onward transfer are needed. There is no transport between the doors of these mountain huts.
By car
Road arrival is possible in the Savica area through Ukanc, followed by a separate mountain approach. The Komarča ascent to Triglav Lakes Hut is steep and exposed, requiring suitable experience. The stage finishes below Krn in another mountain area. Organise a return to your vehicle after the separate descent.
Parking
P9 Parking at Savica is paid. The arrangements introduced in August2026 list EUR7 for up to three hours or EUR15 per day for vehicles below two metres high, with card payment at the barrier. Check posted conditions and rules for a prolonged absence. Waterfall admission is separate. The car park lies below the high stage departure.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 1637 м.
SurfaceGravel 72%, Dirt 18%, Improved surface 5%.
Риски The sustained ascent from the lake district to the upper saddle and shelter is the principal challenge. Uneven rock, scree and karst hollows require attention even when dry. Snow or ice changes the crossing substantially. Keep dogs on a lead and out of the mountain lake; check hut admission separately. Swimming and camping outside permitted places are prohibited in the national park.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 8 h 31 min
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
Allow an estimated 8–10 hours for the mountain stage itself in dry, snow-free conditions with good fitness. Add the approach to the first hut and descent after the finishing building separately. On12October2026, both endpoint huts are closed for serviced accommodation. Gomiščkovo’s lobby offers emergency space on benches and tables, without a guaranteed bed. Confirm the rest and mountain-exit plan before starting.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Prefer settled, snow-free summer or early-autumn conditions with dry upper rock. Check hut openings and available places independently of the weather. An attractive autumn lake does not remove short days, early snow or seasonal service closures. Avoid a late departure relying on a guaranteed dinner or conventional overnight accommodation at the finishing shelter.

What to bring
