Route description

The French Road towards Maly Babulgan begins at the northern junction near Tekne Spring. Kurlyu-Burun Pass provides a distinct mountain stop before the path changes sides towards Khovalykh. Examine the old road as part of the landscape: its bends negotiate the slope, woodland gives way to more open ground, and the direction towards Maly Babulgan becomes clearer gradually. This outing links the northern road side with the Maly Babulgan valley. It does not begin directly at the old Ai-Dimitriy campsite, despite the former title. Confirm access to the woodland beginning and present road conditions. The author describes older retaining structures and sections of indistinct path, so plan with a map and an independent return rather than expecting an equipped promenade.

Route suitability

For walkers prepared to navigate a wooded mountain road. Children need climbing and descending experience. Current dog and bicycle permissions, campsite operation and reception are unconfirmed.

Nearby

The older Ai-Dimitriy side and Tea House need additional approaches. Soldiers’ Lake and neighbouring Khovalykh branches are excluded from this passage. Confirm campsite access and overnight options separately.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание

Риски Navigation matters at junctions and where the road becomes indistinct. Avoid treating a neighbouring gully as an obvious shortcut; its obstacles need independent checking. Rain can leave slippery stones and ground. Check current Tekne flow and carry your own water.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 1 h 55 min
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
Plan a separate daylight woodland outing with an unhurried pass crossing. Arrival at the northern beginning and exit from Maly Babulgan are additional. Returning along the road needs time and energy reserved separately.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Choose a dry, snow-free day with dependable visibility. Postpone unfamiliar junctions after heavy rain or in mist. Winter snow hides the old road and changes conditions; lower-side access does not establish the whole passage.

What to bring

Базовый список для комфортного похода
Gripping footwear and poles
Water and food for return
Offline junction map and compass
Rain protection and a warm layer
First-aid kit, phone, power bank and torch
