Route description

From Yagodnaya to Lake Baikal through the Shabartuy is a winter ski passage from the Olkha Plateau towards a coastal valley. The start lies inside the woodland region and needs a separately planned approach. After reaching the Shabartuy headwaters, the itinerary gradually descends along the river, with the wooded valley narrowing nearer the lake. At the end, traces of another era appear: power-station ruins and the old Inverted Bridge of the Circum-Baikal railway. Lake Baikal is the final coastal reference, while continuing to Slyudyanka belongs to a separate journey. Prepared skiers can consider this version after confirming park access, a safe finish and river conditions.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
Without a car - Hard With children - No With a dog - No data By bike - No With a stroller - No Mobile signal - No data Experience of countryside ski passages and an arranged return are necessary. Park access and a safe bypass of the ruins remain unconfirmed. River overflow ice, possible trail-breaking and the absence of a complete transport approach make this unsuitable as a children’s outing. Check permission to bring a dog separately.

Nearby

In September 2026, the park authority reported restrictions on Circum-Baikal railway and Olkha Plateau tourist itineraries because of bear activity. As checked on 14 October, reopening of the required coastal itinerary is unconfirmed: check its status and permission with the park authority before winter planning. Railway tunnels, Cape Stolby, Slyudyanka and the continuation through Angasolka to Tyomnaya Pad belong to different journeys. They are absent from this passage; historical camps and fires do not establish present camping permissions.

What to expect

Places
Shabartuy Valley The main natural setting is the descent from the river’s headwaters through a wooded valley. It narrows nearer the shore; river overflow ice needs checking even in freezing weather.
Inverted Bridge over the Shabartuy An unusual old Circum-Baikal railway bridge beside the end of the valley passage. Its metal span rests on stone supports. Viewing it from a permitted approach does not establish access across the bridge.
Power Station Ruins by the Shabartuy A ruined building near the railway-side finish. It adds a trace of local infrastructure to the forest passage; establish a safe bypass beforehand and do not enter the ruins.
Lake Baikal at the Shabartuy Mouth The coastal reference at the end of the descent from the forest. The outing stops on the river-valley side before the railway structures; a separate passage to the water’s edge and any ice continuation require confirmation.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 83 м.
SurfaceТип покрытия пока не определён.
Риски Wet overflow ice is known on the Shabartuy: water can lie above ice and beneath snow. Present river usability and safe passages between individual sections are unconfirmed. Establish a permitted bypass of the ruined power station at the finish; do not pass through the ruins or use the railway bridge. Much of the valley falls within the mapped national-park boundary: agree this specific winter itinerary and access before departure. A general itinerary description does not cancel current restrictions.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 3 h 9 min
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
First confirm access, the Yagodnaya approach, a safe finish and onward transport. Allow the full daylight period for this section, with a margin for snow and overflow ice; a reliable total duration is unknown. A journey from Trudny station to Slyudyanka includes additional passages absent here. Overnight options, authorised camping places and a longer expedition plan require separate agreement, rather than transfer from historical accounts.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Winter with established snow, confirmed access and checked river conditions. Even severe frost does not remove the risk of wet overflow ice. A prepared ski trail is not guaranteed; fresh snow can change effort and timing substantially. This forest passage does not establish safety on Lake Baikal’s ice.

What to bring

Базовый список для комфортного похода
Countryside skis, sound bindings and basic repair equipment.
Warmth and wind protection, with spare dry socks and gloves protected against moisture.
Drinking water, a flask and reserve food.
A map of the approach, river valley and selected finish; a phone with reserve power, a light and first aid.
Choose equipment for possible delays after agreeing access and conditions; do not rely on a spring, an open refuge or a prepared campsite.
