Route description

Sanatorny to Podkamennaya via Pharaoh and Cleopatra is a walking passage on the Olkha Plateau’s western side. From Sanatorny, a forest road climbs towards the watershed slopes and leads to the two rock outcrops. Pharaoh is recognisable by a large projection suggesting a profile in a headdress; neighbouring Cleopatra has its own extended stone wall. After visiting the pair, the outing continues towards Podkamennaya. The journey connects different railway sides with a woodland approach, a distinct rock stop and a separate continuation through stream valleys. Pay attention to branches and the wet low ground of a right-bank tributary of Podosinovaya. Rock ascents are optional; choose a safe viewing place according to current conditions.

Route suitability

Railway references are confirmed on both the starting and finishing sides. Children need experience of woodland outings and close adult supervision beside rocks and wet areas; ground-level viewing is preferable to an independent ascent. A complete cycling passage and local dog-access conditions are unknown. Forest paths and wet ground are unsuitable for a stroller.

Nearby

Other approaches to Pharaoh and Cleopatra start from Kultuk Road. They do not replace the Sanatorny–Podkamennaya forest passage. Vorona, Shakhtay and the rocks on the Orlyonok side belong to other itineraries. A separate visit to Podosinovaya’s main channel is unconfirmed here; its tributary’s wet low ground needs attention. As checked on 14 October, cafés, equipment hire, warming facilities, present markings and specific local access conditions remain unknown.

Without a car
Sanatorny and Podkamennaya appear in official Baikal suburban services. Choose arrival on the Sanatorny side and a return from Podkamennaya using the timetable for your date. Establish permitted platform exits and the approach to the start: Sanatorny’s stop reference is not an exact pedestrian entrance. Cross railway lines only at designated places.
By car
Exact vehicle access is unconfirmed. Establish arrival on the Sanatorny starting side or a meeting on the Podkamennaya finishing side separately, arranging a return to the car beforehand. The shorter rock approach from Kultuk Road is another itinerary; it cannot automatically establish access to this passage’s start.
Parking
Parking is unconfirmed. Establish a lawful place for the car on your chosen arrival side before travel; a parking area described for another approach does not confirm parking at your start.

What to expect

Places
Pharaoh Rock A rock outcrop whose projection suggests the profile of an Egyptian ruler. It provides the forest passage’s main rock stop. View it from a safe distance from the overhanging “nose”; the guide specifically warns of a crack in that part of the rock.
Cleopatra Rock A separate neighbouring outcrop with an extended wall. Together with Pharaoh it forms a recognisable pair; the approach allows viewing the layered rock shapes without requiring an ascent to the top.

Риски Forest branches, climbs and a wet tributary of Podosinovaya require care. In the individual author’s account, part of the connection after leaving the power-line clearing required clarification: do not assume an unmistakable path here. After rain, low ground may require a permitted local-road alternative. Keep clear of Pharaoh’s overhanging “nose”; the published guide warns of a crack. Do not stand beneath it or plan to climb onto it. Present rock-edge condition and a safe ascent of Cleopatra are separately unconfirmed.

Allow daylight for the complete passage, both rocks and finding the correct forest continuation to Podkamennaya. A reliable total duration is unknown: wet low ground, branches and stops change the pace. Select a return and an alternative plan if delayed beforehand. A short Pharaoh approach’s published duration does not apply to the entire outing.

Snow-free periods with drier forest roads are a practical choice for this walk. Spring saturation and sustained rain worsen low ground; autumn wet rocks and early ice require extra care. Check a complete winter version, marking and the tributary passage separately.
