Route description

A stone world lies between the railway and the highway near Glubokaya: the Gate locality. Woodland gives way to a ridge of outcrops where it is easy to linger. Basilisk has a recognisable head and hump, while Horseshoe Rock forms an arcing wall reminiscent of an old fortress. The locality’s name appears on a pre-war topographic map. The approach starts on the Glubokaya side and reaches the ridge’s viewing point, offering Lake Baikal and surrounding mountain ranges in clear weather. Attention then moves from the distant panorama to nearby stone forms. This version includes rocky sections and part of the return, but ends before the station. Select a complete return to Glubokaya and connections between separate sections beforehand, leaving the stones as the day’s main impression.

Route at a glance

Главное за минуту
To see a ridge with a mountain outlook, Basilisk’s imaginative figure and Horseshoe Rock’s stone fortress during one woodland outing. Changing your angle is part of the interest: the large wall and individual outcrop look different from the woodland side. Choose clear weather and leave time to look around slowly, with the full return prepared beforehand.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
Without a car - Hard With children - No With a dog - No data By bike - No data With a stroller - No Mobile signal - No data The station near the start is confirmed, but plan the whole return to it separately. Rock edges, indistinct paths and the highway crossing side require experienced guidance. An old family outing from a car does not establish this complete version as suitable for children. Dog access and cycling conditions throughout the rocky passage are unknown.

Nearby

Kudliny Rocks, Andrianovsky Rock and the Five Brothers appear in the author’s material as distant landmarks rather than visited places here. Gate Rock on the plateau’s western side and Tsar’s Gates are different destinations. A separate vehicle approach is described from the highway; check its stopping area and current road conditions independently rather than treating it as parking at Glubokaya. The primary account mentions a meteorologist’s memorial and building remains, but their exact location on this version is unconfirmed. As checked on 14 October, services, signal, drinking water and local access require clarification.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Glubokaya is confirmed in the Baikal suburban operator’s network near the start. Select arrival and a return train from the timetable for your date. Establish a permitted platform approach and railway-side crossings before departure; walking beside rails in an older account is not a safe instruction. The finish lies before the station, so include returning to it separately.
By car
Exact vehicle access is unconfirmed. Establish lawful arrival on the Glubokaya starting side, a meeting point and a subsequent return to the car. A different vehicle-side approach to the rock locality does not replace this route’s station-side start and needs its own plan.
Parking
Parking is unconfirmed. Establish a lawful place for the car on your selected arrival side beforehand.

What to expect

Places
Gate Locality Rock Ridge The woodland ridge’s main viewing side. The author’s materials describe views towards Lake Baikal, Khamar-Daban and the Tunka Mountains in clear weather. Inspect edges cautiously without stepping onto unverified ledges.
Basilisk Rock A stone figure with a distinctive head and hump on the ridge. It is also called Camel, Guardian’s Head and Crocodile; changing your angle reveals different associations.
Horseshoe Rock An arcing stone wall on the western part of the rocky passage. Its outline resembles a fortress, and its name describes the outcrop’s shape. Look at the wall in its woodland setting; climbing every ledge is not part of the confirmed visit.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 346 м.
SurfaceТип покрытия пока не определён.
Риски Establish a safe permitted crossing of the R-258 on the highway side; the author specifically notes heavy traffic. Beyond the forest road, the path to the ridge is indistinct in places. An older walking account describes fallen timber, ravine detours and searching through windfall; check present conditions separately. Rock edges and wet ledges require care. Do not choose connections between separate sections or the final return to Glubokaya by guesswork.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 3 h 12 min
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
A reliable total duration is unknown. A one-day outing must include approaching from Glubokaya, viewing the ridge, Basilisk and Horseshoe Rock, then the entire return to the station. Club timings apply to other individual approaches rather than this complete version. Set a deadline to leave the rocks, a margin for an unclear path and time before the return train. Overnight lodging in the locality is separately unconfirmed.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
A clear snow-free day with drier stone and clearly visible paths is more practical for a first visit. In autumn the ridge offers changing colours in the forest and distant mountains. Wet weather reduces the outlook and makes ledges slippery. Shaded places can already be icy in late autumn, as noted in the primary walking account. A prepared winter path and current waymarking throughout are unknown.

What to bring

Базовый список для комфортного похода
Grippy footwear for paths and stone, weather-appropriate clothing and rain protection.
A map of specific approaches and a full return, navigation equipment and reserve phone power.
Drinking water of your own and food: a verified supply on the ridge is unknown.
A light, first aid and a warm layer for stops at the viewpoint.
An agreed response to an unclear path; independent cliff-edge exploration and climbing do not replace a safe visit.
