Route description

From Orlyonok, this approach goes beyond a familiar outing to the nearest Olkha outcrops. The forest road passes the Bolshaya Olkha, follows the Zyryansky Creek valley and gradually reaches the Bolshaya Polovinnaya basin. Ahead lies the wooded interior that gives Potainye Rocks their remote character. Vityaz and Zerkala remain to the side, while the main encounter with granite comes at the end. Before the final ascent, the selected approach passes around the eastern side of the hill and reaches the massif over a wooded slope. At Potainye Rocks, the plateau takes on another character: heaps of granite emerge from the forest, and a safe open position can reveal the surrounding wooded ridges in clear weather. Allow time for the rock forms and forest horizons without turning the visit into climbing wet walls. The outing ends at the rocks; return and overnight arrangements need separate preparation. Obtain confirmation of reopening before travelling: the park suspended permits in August 2026 because of bears. Visits follow current park conditions, in an organised accompanied group; agree the eastern final approach beforehand as well.

Route at a glance

Главное за минуту
For a remote granite massif reached through a succession of Olkha Plateau forest valleys. The Bolshaya Olkha, Zyryansky Creek and Bolshaya Polovinnaya mark the transition from a railway settlement to the taiga interior. Potainye Rocks give the long approach a clear purpose: in suitable weather, examine the natural boulder formations and look across the surrounding forest from a safe position.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
Without a car - Hard With children - No With a dog - No data By bike - No data With a stroller - No Mobile signal - No data The complete approach is for a fit walker experienced in forest navigation. Rail serves Orlyonok, but no public transport return from the rocks is established. This is unsuitable as a family stroll; the current passport also excludes children under six. A visit requires confirmed reopening, permission and an organised accompanied group. Agree dog and bicycle arrangements separately; the final hillside is unsuitable for a stroller, and do not rely on phone reception.

Nearby

Vityaz, Zerkala, Zyryanovsky Rock and other outcrops near Orlyonok need their own branches and are not visited on this approach. Authors describe a through-gap among boulders and remains of an old survey structure at Potainye Rocks, but their separate safe approaches and present condition are not established here. They are not promised stops or overnight shelters. Use national park camping places only under an agreed programme after access resumes.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
The approach starts beside Orlyonok Railway Halt, reached by suburban train from the Irkutsk direction. Check present services, the actual train stop and the permitted platform exit before travelling. The very beginning requires crossing an operating railway: use the equipped pedestrian crossing and follow its rules. There is no railway halt at Potainye Rocks; prepare the return to transport before setting out.
By car
This version begins on foot beside Orlyonok. Check permitted vehicle drop-off near the halt and storage separately. Older accounts describe an off-road approach from Bolshoy Lug, but that is a separate option requiring its own access checks and national park agreement. It does not authorise driving along this complete outing or remove the final walking ascent.
Parking
Parking is unconfirmed. A railway area, forest junction or former ranger post does not establish a place for long-term vehicle storage. Agree lawful parking before travelling or prepare rail arrival. Keep railway approaches clear and do not drive over natural ground outside permitted access.

What to expect

Places
Bolshaya Olkha River the river on the initial forest approach from Orlyonok.
Zyryansky Creek the wooded creek valley followed after leaving the Vityaz direction.
Bolshaya Polovinnaya River a taiga river on the road into the plateau.
Potainye Rocks granite outcrops on a wooded hill. In clear weather, a safe open position gives views across the surrounding Olkha Plateau ridges.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 867 м.
SurfaceТип покрытия пока не определён.
Риски Remoteness, forest junctions and the final rocky slopes require an experienced accompanying guide. The selected eastern ascent differs from the current official northern path: ask the park to confirm this specific approach rather than bypassing restrictions independently. Check crossings of the Bolshaya Olkha and Bolshaya Polovinnaya before departure; an old wooden-bridge account does not establish its present condition. Wet moss, gaps between boulders and drops make the rocks dangerous after rain and under snow. An announced bear closure is a reason to postpone the outing rather than look for a bypass.

How much time to allow

Расчётное время в пути 9 h 15 min

Time for the route | Unestablished With stops | Unestablished The day-by-day schedule for a multiday outing is unestablished. This is the approach from Orlyonok to the rocks, without the return. Do not rely on a quick return to an evening train. Agree the complete outing, permitted overnight location, food reserve and return with the park and accompanying guide beforehand. The park’s standard two-day programme has a different arrangement, so its timings cannot be assigned automatically to this approach. Its Quarter 92 camping location lies off this outing and needs a separate connecting journey.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Choose snow-free walking conditions, dry rocks and enough daylight after confirmed reopening. An autumn date does not remove a temporary bear restriction. After rain, during icing or under early snow, leave the final slope out of the plan. Winter passage needs separate agreement and preparation for deep snow; a maintained ski route is not established here.

What to bring

Базовый список для комфортного похода
Walking boots with grip, wind and rain protection, and a warm layer.
Water and food for the complete agreed outing; the rivers are not established drinking-water supplies.
A map of forest junctions, compass, headlamp, charged phone and backup power.
Personal first-aid supplies, seasonal tick protection and a bag for all waste.
Park permission and agreed accompanying arrangements. Carry a tent, sleeping bag and mat only for an agreed permitted overnight location; discuss wildlife deterrents and procedures with the guide.
