Route description

Podkamennaya’s forest roads lead towards two distinct sides of the Olkha Plateau. On the Lion Rock side, a granite ridge appears among the trees, with a tower projection that resembles the head of a resting animal. The outcrop has its own walking history: Viktor Sher helped establish the Lion name, and its surroundings were a meeting place for Angarsk walkers. The stone itself and its woodland setting are the main reasons to come today. The western direction offers a different scene: the Irkut Horseshoe Viewpoint looks towards a bend in the large river. Internal roads, stream hollows and many branches lie between these impressions. These are several woodland directions whose connections need to be established before departure. For a first visit, choose a specific destination and a confirmed return; a northern continuation towards other outcrops requires separate checking.

Murena, Tanki and Munchausen are separate rock destinations on neighbouring directions, with visits unconfirmed here. The Shumikha Rock Group lies near the northern continuation, but a continuous approach requires separate checking. Old accounts of ski nights near Vyguzovo belong to the past and do not establish a functioning house. As checked on 14 October, permissions for chosen woodland passages, current crossings, signal, services, drinking water and a complete return are unknown; establish conditions for individual sections beforehand.

Places
Lion Rock A granite ridge whose projection resembles a resting lion’s head. The woodland approach offers a look at the outcrop and a connection with the Olkha Plateau’s walking traditions. A visit at its base does not include climbing its rock faces.
Irkut Horseshoe Viewpoint A western viewpoint towards the Irkut’s broad bend. It opens up the river valley after woodland roads, with particularly striking changes of colour in autumn. Reaching the view does not include descending to the water or crossing the river.
Podosinovaya Stream A stream along the forest approach from Podkamennaya. Channel crossings and a wet hollow are encountered here; the author’s materials describe a bridge and boards. Check their present condition before setting out.
Levkin Stream A wooded tributary of the Podosinovaya in its own hollow. Crossing this wet valley is a characteristic part of the Lion Rock approach, drawing attention from the road to the stream and forested slopes. Safe passage depends on water levels and current conditions.

Риски Wet crossings occur in the Podosinovaya and Levkin hollows; older descriptions of boards and a small bridge do not confirm their present condition. Fallen timber and indistinct roads also occur. When reaching the highway side, use only a confirmed safe crossing. Connections between separate directions, particularly the northern continuation, need checking with someone who knows the area. Reaching the viewpoint and Lion Rock’s base does not permit cliff descents or climbing its faces.
