Route description

Three Decembrists Pass links the mountain-hidden Arkhut valley with Kharimta, which leads towards the southern side of the Tunkinsky Mountains. This version is an exit stage: it starts on the Arkhut side below the pass, crosses the ridge and descends beside Kharimta. Prepare an independent approach to its mountain start. The finish remains in forest beyond the Tyomnaya area; a completed exit to Arshan or a vehicle road is outside this stage. Grassy slopes and the pass notch initially hold the view. The Arkhut ascent requires attention to the stream and confined valley sections, especially after rain. The pass reveals another mountain side: Kharimta leads down between slopes, gradually returning the journey from open mountain terrain to woodland. In the Kharimta valley, choosing a reliable bank-side way matters more than rushing towards the exit. Firsthand observations record a hut site and crossing. They explain the sequence of places but do not promise available accommodation or a present safe link between banks. The lower section changes from riverside travel to a forest way towards the southern side. This crossing makes an interesting final stage of an independently prepared mountain journey, revealing both sides of the pass and a valley hidden from the resort streets.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
Without a car - Hard With children - No With a dog - With caution By bike - No With a stroller - No Mobile signal - No data For a prepared walking group experienced in pass crossings, wet slopes and river assessment. The start is already in the mountains, so suitability also depends on the separate Arkhut approach and prepared continuation beyond the forest finish. This is unsuitable for a family walk from Arshan. With a dog, consider steep slopes, water and the national park’s requirement to control the animal; verify suitability throughout independently. Continuous mobile reception is unestablished.

Nearby

Malaya Kharimta and its valley need a separate branch; descending lower Kharimta does not automatically include their visit. Doctor Peak, Bronenosets, Arshansky Pass and Artemyev Lake belong to other mountain variants. Kyngarga and its waterfalls, Arshan’s mineral springs and a resort walk may complement the trip after an independently prepared exit. They are outside this crossing between Arkhut and Kharimta’s lower forest side. The hut was recorded in earlier observations. Its present survival, permitted entry and overnight use are unknown; carry self-sufficient supplies independently of the building. The old crossing point also does not replace a present bank assessment. Arshan is a side for organising travel, obtaining supplies and arranging departure. Check accommodation, vehicle storage and local delivery in advance. This stage’s forest finish remains separate from the village and road junction.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Direct public transport to the Arkhut start and from the forest finish is unconfirmed. Arshan is a side for organising regional travel, followed by an independent walking approach to the pass. Prepare a permitted continuation from the lower forest side to an agreed meeting point and check present return travel before setting out. Arshan’s inclusion in the broader original journey does not mean this stage already ends in the village.
By car
Plan to leave a vehicle on an agreed Arshan side or another prepared approach base. Driving to the high Arkhut start is unestablished. The forest finish is also unconfirmed as a vehicle meeting point: a forest path approaches it, with continuation to a road needing separate checks. Do not send transport into the Kharimta valley without confirming permission, forest access and river crossings.
Parking
Parking is unconfirmed. Agree vehicle storage in a settlement with the receiving party before the mountain approach. The earlier Arkhut rest place and Kharimta hut site are unconfirmed as parking. Prepare a separate vehicle-accessible meeting point for departure.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 597 м.
SurfaceТип покрытия пока не определён.
Риски The Arkhut pass approach includes a confined stream valley and a grassy upper slope. Wet grass, snow and high water alter route choice. A neighbouring hillside bypass is unprepared without a present assessment of permission and safety. Reserve time for turning back and avoid unfamiliar snow without appropriate skills and equipment. The Kharimta descent is steep. Reassess actual banks, water and path conditions in the valley. The author’s earlier crossing point does not establish a present bridge or safe ford. If a crossing is unconfirmed, use a separately prepared permitted bypass, finish earlier or leave out the complete crossing. Choose the forest direction carefully beyond the lower river sections. The finish does not yet reach transport. Obtain required Tunkinsky National Park visit permission and confirm this particular crossing, forest continuation and any overnight places. General permission does not replace checks of closed zones and mountain safety.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 4 h 45 min
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
The full time for this exact stage is unestablished. Calculate the Arkhut approach, pass crossing, Kharimta descent and remaining continuation from the forest finish to departure separately. The stage’s one-day classification does not establish the complete journey from Arshan and back within a day. Agree any required overnight places, water, weather reserve and early exit. Register the mountain journey with EMERCOM and arrange check-in messages and confirmation of return.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Summer conditions after checking pass slopes, streams and Kharimta. Avoid choosing the crossing by the calendar alone: rain makes grassy slopes slippery and may change river connections. Snow may remain on the pass early in the warmer season, while fog conceals valleys and the forest direction. A winter repeat is unverified and requires an independent mountain and avalanche plan.
