Route description

This high mountain variation from Dunta requires separate agreement on the entire programme with protected-area administrators and a specialist in technical mountain travel. Opening the ordinary Tsey Glacier nature trail does not authorize glacier crossings or a ridge traverse. The concept explores a severe part of Ossetia where valley approaches give way to moraines and glacier cirques. The Kaisartsete and Donisartsete areas reveal different sides of the Tsey Ridge: northern ice basins followed by a return towards the more settled Tsey gorge. For an experienced mountain group, the attraction lies in the gradual change from Dunta village to ice and broken ridges. The Tsey part includes additional excursions, and its finish belongs to the upper glacier direction. Plan the separate exit to collection beforehand. Nearby summit names do not establish straightforward passes. Choose a programme with an experienced leader who can determine a permitted and suitable passage for the group.

Route at a glance

Главное за минуту
Explore the Kaisartsete and Donisartsete glacier cirques and the mountain connection between Digoria and the Tsey Ridge. The concept suits an experienced group after independent technical assessment and permission checks. Ordinary walkers should choose an approved lower nature trail.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
Without a car - Hard With children - No With a dog - No By bike - No With a stroller - No Mobile signal - No data Delivery, separate collection and experience of technical mountain journeys are necessary. Glacier and rock sections are unsuitable for ordinary family walks, dogs, bicycles or strollers. Continuous mobile coverage is unconfirmed. Agree visiting conditions before departure.

Nearby

The Rekom sanctuary is away from this line and needs a separate approach respecting local rules. For an ordinary introduction to Tsey, select currently approved nature trails and view the glacier from a permitted safe place. Ascents of Malaya Songuti and Burevestnik-Tseysky are independent mountaineering objectives and should not be silently added to the crossing.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Regular transport directly to the precise Dunta beginning or from the upper finish is unconfirmed. Arrange delivery and collection from an accessible valley location after a separate exit. Do not rely on a chance lift following the glacier section.
By car
Agree delivery to Dunta after checking village approaches and restrictions. The upper glacier finish is not a vehicle collection point: a separate permitted exit to an accessible road comes first. Establish the meeting location and date alongside the group plan.
Parking
A verified parking facility at the precise beginning has not been established. Ask where leaving a vehicle in Dunta is permitted and check signs and conditions. The finish requires a separate valley exit and return to the car.

What to expect

Places
Kaisartsete Glacier The Kaisar glacier area lies above Dunta and connects with neighbouring high mountain cirques. Selecting a precise passage across the ice belongs to the group’s technical planning.
Donisartsete Glacier The Donisar glacier occupies a cirque on the northern side of the Tsey Ridge. Historical observations describe changes in its extent and its relationship with the neighbouring Kaisar area.
Tsey Glacier This substantial upper Tsey valley glacier belongs to the Karaugom–Tsey glaciated mountain area. Observe it from a permitted safe place without approaching the ice grotto.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 1606 м.
SurfaceТип покрытия пока не определён.
Риски Glacier sections require assessment of crevasses, snow bridges, ice and rockfall. Broken rock, cornices and complex descents may occur in the ridge area; ordinary hiking skills are insufficient. The leader must identify the precise saddle and method using current information rather than the name of a nearby summit. Approaching the ice grotto and unstable glacier tongue at Tsey is prohibited. The approved lower nature trail does not establish permission for this full high mountain programme. Abandon the crossing if a permitted and suitable alternative cannot be established.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 13 h 50 min
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
This is a multiday technical mountain concept: approximately 38 km with additional excursions in the Tsey part. After separate acclimatization, provisionally allow 4–6 days; the leader must finalize timing once a permitted passage is selected. Day 1: a verified approach from Dunta. Day 2: the chosen Kaisar glacier-area section. Day 3: independently assessed continuation in the Donisar and ridge area. Day 4: a permitted exit into the Tsey valley. Days 5–6: agreed additional outings, return and weather contingency. This is an editorial plan by area, not an established description of every saddle or safe campsite. The upper finish does not imply road access; allow the descent to collection separately.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Plan only within a suitable summer window after checking snow, ice and visiting rules. Snow-free valley weather is insufficient: snow bridges, rockfall and high mountain cold change independently of resort conditions. Autumn or winter passage needs a separate technical assessment. A notice opening lower nature trails is not seasonal permission for this variation.

What to bring

Базовый список для комфортного похода
Mountain boots, helmet and clothing for cold, wind and rain.
Glacier and protection equipment selected by the leader: crampons, ice axe, harness and ropes appropriate to the programme.
Navigation equipment, food reserve, water treatment and group first-aid supplies.
Emergency communication and an agreed response plan for delays.
Identification and permits suitable for every chosen protected section.
