Route description

At Buron, the introduction to the Tsey gorge begins with Afsati. The white figure recalls Ossetian traditions about the guardian of wild animals and the responsibility of hunters. Nearby, a huge horn hangs from a cliff, adding a contemporary reference to mountain hospitality. Water then takes centre stage: pause beside the Skazdon in Tsey and follow the Ardon as the journey returns to the larger Alagir gorge. This variation combines outings around Tsey with road sections through Mizur and Unal towards Tamisk. Organise them as separate walks with agreed transfers. This leaves time to examine the Buron monuments and notice the change from a close side valley to the main Ardon gorge, while conserving attention and energy beside traffic.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
Without a car - Hard With children - No With a dog - No data By bike - No data With a stroller - No Mobile signal - No data The complete set of sections requires agreed transfers and lengthy road walking. Choose separate short monument visits with children. Dog access, uninterrupted cycling passage and mobile coverage are unconfirmed. Mountain verges and approaches are unsuitable for strollers.

Nearby

Rekom Sanctuary requires a separate approach and observance of its traditional male visiting restrictions. Do not include it automatically in a roadside outing. The Tsey and Skaz glaciers require independent planning: avoid ice grottoes and do not treat an excursion ascent as permission to walk onto ice.

What to expect

Places
Afsati Sculpture The white sculpture at the entrance to the Tsey gorge depicts the guardian of wild animals and hunters in Ossetian tradition.
Horn on the Cliff near Buron A large horn is suspended by chains on the cliff. View it from a safe place away from traffic.
Skazdon River Fed by the Skaz Glacier, this river joins the Tseydon, linking the valley to its glaciated upper reaches.
Ardon River The main river of the Alagir gorge connects its mountain side valleys. Observe it from stable ground without descending loose banks.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 2087 м.
SurfaceТип покрытия пока не определён.
Риски Vehicles, narrow verges and bends with poor visibility are the main road hazards. Arrange transfers between the separate outings: direct walking shortcuts between them are unconfirmed. Avoid unstable descents to the rivers. Observe reserve rules in Tsey and obtain required permission; this does not automatically authorise the entire side valley. Shorten the walk in fog, heavy rain or icy conditions.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 23 h 24 min
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
For walking all six separate sections, totalling approximately 67.8 km, allow a multiday trip of 4–6 days. Arrange transfers and accommodation separately. Day 1: the Tsey gorge outing beside the Skazdon. Day 2: Buron, Afsati and the Horn on the Cliff. Days 3–4: longer road sections towards Mizur and Unal, divided at agreed collection points. Day 5: the remaining section towards Tamisk. Day 6: weather and transfer contingency. This is an editorial walking plan for separate outings, not a confirmed programme undertaken by the author. A gap of approximately 4.4 km separates two sections; walking through it is not included. The complete journey is not a single day walk.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Choose dry, snow-free summer or early-autumn weather. Check permitted forest approaches and seasonal reserve arrangements in Tsey. The author’s May journey does not guarantee snow-free conditions in a later season. Road conditions and bank stability matter after heavy rain.
