Route description

Karmadon and Dargavs sit close together on the map, yet tell different stories of Ossetia. The stepped pale roofs of the Dargavs necropolis turn attention towards the distant past of mountain communities. Memorials in the Karmadon gorge recall a much more recent tragedy that transformed the Genaldon valley. Quiet pauses and respectful observation belong here. The continuation over Saniba Pass leads into the Suargom valley and towards Balta. This journey needs careful preparation: bridge construction and protective works affect the road between Gornaya Saniba and Karmadon, so confirm that passage is permitted before travelling. If it is unavailable, the necropolis and memorials can still form separate visits with transport arranged in advance.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
Without a car - Hard With children - No With a dog - No data By bike - No data With a stroller - No Mobile signal - No data The complete walking variation needs several days and prearranged transport. Children are better suited to a separate supervised necropolis visit. Dog access to museum and memorial grounds is unconfirmed. The road has not been assessed as a safe cycling itinerary; mountain conditions and active roadworks prevent a stroller recommendation. No verified mobile coverage survey is available.

Nearby

Upper Karmadon baths and the glaciers require a different approach and their own permit checks and preparation. Check current museum conditions for the Dargavs necropolis shortly before visiting. Confirming through passage matters more than combining every gorge into one journey.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Current regular transport to the precise start and a suitable return service from the finish are unconfirmed. Arrange delivery and collection beforehand; do not rely on finding transport along the pass road. Separate memorial visits need their own approaches and same-day return arrangements.
By car
Ask the road authority about the Gornaya Saniba–Karmadon section before travelling: published reports describe bridge construction and slope protection. Do not use it for a vehicle transfer without confirmation that traffic is permitted. Follow workers’ directions and retain an opportunity to turn around before the work zone.
Parking
A dedicated parking facility at the precise start is not confirmed. Check signs and stopping permission at your chosen drop-off point. Do not leave a vehicle in the carriageway, work zone or beside a memorial without permission.

What to expect

Places
Dargavs Necropolis Pyramidal stone tombs form one of Ossetia’s distinctive historic ensembles. View them from outside and observe museum rules.
Grieving Mother Memorial At the former Nadezhda search camp, a woman’s figure and a glacier-borne boulder commemorate people lost in the Karmadon disaster.
Sergei Bodrov and Film Crew Memorial Plaques beside the tunnel commemorate the film crew lost in the Kolka glacier disaster. Pause quietly here.
Saniba Pass The pass separates the Genaldon and Suargom valleys. Cross only after checking current roadwork restrictions.
Balsag Wheel This artwork refers to the Nart epic and the wheel associated with Soslan’s death, introducing local mythology between historic stops.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 2395 м.
SurfaceТип покрытия пока не определён.
Риски Through passage over Saniba Pass depends on roadworks; do not commit to reaching the Suargom valley before checking access. Rockfall, vehicles, fog and ice are hazards. Remain on permitted roads, avoid blocked tunnels and keep clear of construction equipment. Do not enter tombs or touch remains in the necropolis. Maintain quiet behaviour at memorials. Glacier travel is a separate undertaking.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 1 d 5 h
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
Allow a multiday plan of 4–5 days for all walking sections and the continuation towards Balta, around 86 km overall. An editorial daily guide is 15–22 km, leaving time for memorial visits and the pass road. Day 1: Karmadon section and memorials. Day 2: Dargavs and its necropolis, returning towards the selected continuation. Days 3–4: only with confirmed passage, cross Saniba Pass and follow the Suargom valley. Day 5: contingency time and the finish near Balta. Arrange accommodation and stage boundaries independently; these days do not imply established campsites. If restrictions apply, separate the visits into day outings and omit the unavailable section.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Prefer dry, snow-free days in late spring, summer or early autumn for the walking continuation. Pass access depends on road condition, weather and construction restrictions. Winter brings possible ice, snow and limited daylight; an old January journey is not evidence that independent winter travel is suitable.

What to bring

Stable footwear for stones and roadside walking.
Water and food for each agreed stage.
Rain protection, warm clothing and sun protection.
