Route description

Between Derbent’s old masonry and the Chvizhepse River on the Sochi side, the Caucasian Trail offers very different encounters. Old Amuzgi, Salta Waterfall and Kimizu Pass establish the Dagestan alternation of history, water and mountain stops. Old Hoi and Phakoch then invite attention to stone settlements and a castle complex. The central and western parts bring distinct mountain objectives: Arkhonsky North, Arkhonsky, Beresun and the high Balk-Bashi Pass require independent weather choices and suitable preparation. This is an earlier overall itinerary whose present stages and conditions need fresh checking. It finishes near Chvizhepse, before the Black Sea shore. Do not plan a continuous 2026 traverse: the organiser advises against the Kubachi–Kumukh section because of a hazardous ford and landslides. Select accessible separate stages, agree their arrivals and exits and leave time for historic places. A long acquaintance with the Caucasus can develop through several independent journeys.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 15787 м.
SurfaceТип покрытия пока не определён.
Риски Exclude a continuous 2026 plan because of the Kubachi–Kumukh warning: the Khulakherk ford can become impassable after rain, with landslides reported near Saribaku and Akhar–Khuna. Check crossings, narrow grassy slopes and mountain passages independently on other stages. Do not choose Balk-Bashi from a general overview alone: assess snow, weather, acclimatisation and the party’s skills. Establish protected-area and border-area permissions for the specific stage.

How much time to allow

Расчётное время в пути 15 d 14 h
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
The wider idea is a prolonged multiday journey, but select only separately accessible stages in 2026. Allocate several trekking days to each chosen section, including margins for weather, water and exits. Modern stage timings do not describe the complete earlier itinerary; a verified overall day-by-day plan is unavailable.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
There is no single safe season for every section. Dagestan’s fords depend on rain, while high passes depend on snow and wind. Choose dates for the particular stage and recheck conditions shortly before departure. A dry month does not cancel the 2026 warning.
