Route description

The Amanaus gorge reveals a different side of Dombay: a walking approach beside the river, narrow rock passages and waterfalls. The full direction links Amanaus Waterfall, Devil’s Mill and the two Sufrudjin cascades. It cannot currently be completed: the park’s notice of 6 October 2026 allows visits only as far as Amanaus Waterfall. Devil’s Mill requires an advance border-zone permit, and holding a permit does not override the temporary closure of the upper trail.

Route at a glance

Главное за минуту
The permitted lower section offers a walk away from the resort village beside a mountain river to the first cascade. Once the full approach reopens, its appeal will lie in the sequence of distinct water features: Amanaus, the constricted channel at Devil’s Mill and the separate Sufrudjin falls. Each invites its own pause, making the gorge a destination for the day.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
The lower entrance is reached on foot from Dombay. With children, stay within the permitted section and judge the weather and their stamina; close supervision is essential beside water. The upper trail is currently closed. The rough approach is unsuitable for a stroller. Dog admission and mobile coverage require a separate check with the park.

Nearby

Alibek Waterfall lies in another gorge and needs a separate walk through the Alibek checkpoint; it is not a continuation of the Amanaus trail. Rest in Dombay can follow the return. Turye Lake and the Chuchkhur waterfalls are independent directions with access restrictions, rather than extra stops on this outing. Check their own park notices and border-zone requirements.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
No scheduled bus directly to the Amanaus trail is verified. Visitors already in Dombay can walk towards the river from Teberdinskaya Street and continue to the Amanaus checkpoint. Check services to the village and the return journey separately. Allow for the walk from the checkpoint back to your stop or accommodation.
By car
The official description gives vehicle access along Alanskaya Street as far as a barrier. Continue on foot to the checkpoint and into the gorge. The road does not provide a drive-up visit to the Sufrudjin waterfalls. Confirm the entrance arrangements, checkpoint hours and upper-route restrictions before travelling.
Parking
A parking feature is mapped near the lower Amanaus entrance. Permission to use it, charges and available spaces are unverified; ask staff about the arrangements before arriving. A map symbol does not establish that a vehicle may be left there throughout the day.

What to expect

Amanaus Waterfall the first cascade and the current destination of the permitted walk.
Devil’s Mill a waterfall in a narrow river passage, presently beyond the open-section limit.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainДанные по набору высоты уточняются.
SurfaceDirt 45%, Gravel 23%, Fine gravel 1%, Unknown 31%.
Риски Slippery rocks beside the water and attempts to approach an edge for photographs need particular care. Rain can quickly change the path. Devil’s Mill and the upper falls add more demanding sections, but the walk must not continue there under the current restrictions. Turn around at a closure even if the path remains visible and other people are beyond it.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 2 h 53 min
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
For now, plan only the permitted outing to Amanaus Waterfall and back along the approach. Confirm the access limit at the checkpoint, enjoy the lower gorge and leave enough time to return to Dombay. When the full direction officially reopens, build a fresh day plan: several waterfall stops, the upper trail and the return cannot be timed as a short lower-gorge walk.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Choose a dry, snow-free day with confirmed opening for the lower walk. Heavy rain, early snow or ice on stones can make a visit unsuitable during the usual walking season. For a future Sufrudjin outing, actual upper-trail conditions and access matter more than the calendar month. The October 2026 restrictions must be checked separately.

What to bring

Базовый список для комфортного похода

Drinking water, food and a personal first-aid kit
Passport, cash and access documents required for your chosen section
A map showing the checkpoint and turnaround
Charged phone, power bank and torch
A bag to carry out all rubbish
