Route description

Alibek Waterfall gives a walk out of Dombay a memorable destination. The village yields to a forest road and the Alibek camp, then water and rough stones begin to shape the approach. At the end, the cascade invites a longer pause to listen to the gorge. This version finishes near the waterfall. The park’s notice of 6 October 2026 allows the section as far as Alibek Waterfall while restricting the continuation towards Turye Lake; check the latest access notice before travelling.

Route at a glance

Главное за минуту
The walk unfolds around a clear destination: Dombay, the wooded approach, the named camp and the waterfall. It offers a view of the gorge without promising a glacier excursion. A memorial to a century of Soviet mountaineering beside the lower road also connects the outing with the climbing heritage of Dombay.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
A walking start is practical for visitors already staying in Dombay. Children need stamina, close supervision and enough energy for the return. The upper rocky path and water crossings are unsuitable for a stroller. Ask the park about dogs; dependable mobile data in the gorge is unverified.

Nearby

The Mountaineers’ Cemetery stands near the forest road and needs a separate short detour to the memorial. Visit quietly and respectfully. Turye Lake lies on another branch from the upper junction rather than along a single continuation beyond the waterfall. That branch is restricted at the time of review, and the lake requires an advance border-zone permit. An Alibek Glacier excursion is also outside this walk.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
No direct scheduled bus into the woodland approach is verified. From accommodation in Dombay, walk towards Karachaevskaya Street and the Alibek checkpoint. Plan the intercity journey to the village separately, checking current services and the return departure. Allow time to reach your accommodation after the walk.
By car
Karachaevskaya Street leads from Dombay towards the Alibek checkpoint. Beyond it, the road is stony and unpaved; ask park staff about vehicle entry and current conditions before driving towards the camp. The continuation from the camp to the waterfall is on foot. Driving the lower approach shortens the outing but leaves the upper walking section.
Parking
The approved route passport lists parking before the Alibek checkpoint and at the camp. Using the upper area depends on permitted access along the approach road. Check current arrangements beforehand and follow staff instructions locally; available spaces, security and charges are unverified.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainДанные по набору высоты уточняются.
SurfaceGravel 57%, Compacted dirt 29%, Dirt / grass 3%, Unknown 12%.
Риски Take particular care beyond the camp, where uneven stones and small water crossings slow progress. Wet sections deserve a patient pace after rain. At the waterfall, stop on firm ground rather than stepping onto slippery rocks for a photograph. Save energy for the walk back into Dombay; the destination is only part of the day.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 3 h
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
Give the outing its own day and start in the morning after confirming entry arrangements with the checkpoint. Walk the lower forest road at an easy pace and pause near the camp before the upper trail. Leave time to enjoy the waterfall before turning back. The return is required, and this approach is not a completed circular walk. Turye Lake needs a separate access check and plan.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
For a first visit, choose a snow-free spell with a dry trail and confirmed access. Summer water brings life to the cascade, although crossing conditions still need checking. Autumn makes the forest approach appealing, but daylight is shorter and rocks may ice over. A winter outing requires separate preparation and confirmation from the park.

What to bring

Базовый список для комфортного похода

A waterproof layer and warm clothing for the waterfall stop
Drinking water and food for the outward and return walk
Walking poles if useful on rough descents
Passport and cash for entry arrangements
An offline map, charged phone and torch
A small first-aid kit and rubbish bag
