Route description

Karakol Gorge, Ala-Kul and Altyn-Arashan can be explored through an extended journey returning to familiar valleys. Wooded approaches lead to the lakeshore and pass country, beyond which lie Keldike and Arashan. This version allows more time in the mountain area and needs an agreed sequence of outings. The key stops are concrete places: alpine Ala-Kul and Altyn-Arashan’s hot-spring valley. The journey finishes in mountain terrain; reaching Ak-Suu village requires an additional exit stage.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
Without a car - Hard With children - No With a dog - No data By bike - No data With a stroller - No Mobile signal - Poor A long journey with return visits requires mountain experience and a complete overnight plan. Arrange transport through Karakol. Dog and bicycle rules are unverified; do not rely on mobile reception around the lake and pass.

Nearby

Reaching Ak-Suu village is an additional exit from the Altyn-Arashan area. Telety, Jeti-Oguz and upper glacier valleys are separate mountain stages requiring their own plans.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Use Karakol to organise supplies and a ride to the northern Karakol Valley approach. No bus stop is confirmed at the mountain finish. Add the walking exit toward Ak-Suu and return journey separately.
By car
Agree the initial drop-off, intermediate exit options and final pickup in Karakol. Valley access depends on road conditions. For an Arashan-side exit, choose a driver-reachable point below the mountain sections in advance.
Parking
Before the walk, ask accommodation in Karakol whether they can store your car for the whole trip, including spare days. Parking at the mountain finish is unverified. Car storage and the final pickup are separate arrangements.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 7595 м.
SurfaceТип покрытия пока не определён.
Риски Return visits do not make the pass easier: Ala-Kul still involves rocks, scree and possible snow. Several mountain stages require additional food and options for waiting out bad weather. Avoid high ground in poor visibility and do not make every night depend on a single open facility.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Time for the route 6–8 days
With stops | 8–10 days This allowance is for an extended journey retracing valley sections, rather than the standard direct Ala-Kul crossing. Agree the stage sequence, overnight stops and retreat plan beforehand. Removing the return visits requires a new calculation.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Plan an extended summer walk with a weather margin. Check pass snow before each high outing. Early autumn calls for shorter daily stages and warmer camping equipment.

What to bring

Базовый список для комфортного похода
Bring mountain footwear, poles and protection from wind and rain.
Prepare warm independent camping equipment for several nights and reserve food.
Plan water, a map, backup power, a headlamp and first aid for delays and repeated approaches.
