Route description

Son-Kul’s southern side is especially engaging where summer yurt camps meet roads heading into the mountains. This walk begins around the camps, first returns towards the eastern approach and then heads for Kara-Keche. Familiar sections are covered again in the opposite direction, so the journey suits walkers willing to spend longer within one corridor and notice its details. Kambar-Ata can be a stop arranged with the yurt hosts before the western section leads towards the Kara-Keche locality. Do not assume every return provides a new overnight place: agree suitable camps and a safe exit before departure. Keep a sustainable pace and retain the option of omitting a repeated passage if weather or fatigue makes it unwise.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
No scheduled service to the precise start and western finish has been confirmed. Arrange a drop-off on Son-Kul’s southern side and collection after reaching Kara-Keche. Book a yurt night and driver services separately.
By car
Use a local driver who can confirm the Son-Kul approach after rain or snow. The western finish is around Kara-Keche, so agree a specific collection point. A vehicle excursion over nearby passes does not establish access along every walking section.
Parking
No place for storing a private car throughout the trek has been verified. Discuss storage with a hosting camp or village household rather than leaving it on an arbitrary pasture road.

Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 1086 м.
SurfaceGravel 10%, Improved surface 5%, Unknown 85%.
Риски Some walking passages are poorly visible and have no dependable waymarking. Do not cut across slopes just to maintain a direct bearing; confirm the local passage. Sudden weather changes, wind and cold nights matter in the open basin. Around yurts, respect pasture roads, livestock and dogs. Deteriorating weather is a reason to change the onward plan.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 23 h 43 min
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
Plan | A multi-day journey with repeated passages For all included returns, allow around 4–5 walking days, overnight stops and additional weather reserve. The shorter single passage to Kara-Keche does not provide the timing for this version. If shortening the walk, recalculate stages beforehand and tell the collecting driver the revised plan.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
July and August are the main choice after the road, walking passages and hosting camp have been confirmed. Residual snow can remain in early summer, while yurt operations may end earlier than expected in autumn. Check every arrangement for a September visit and prepare for cold nights.
