Route description

The journey begins on the northern approach to Altyn-Arashan, climbing gradually out of spruce woodland into upper Keldike. Across Ala-Kul Pass, the lake lies enclosed by rocky slopes. The descent into Karakol Gorge changes the mood: the austere lakeshore gives way to trees and the sound of the mountain river. Approaching Ala-Kul from the pass makes the lake part of a complete mountain crossing, rather than a brief stop on a driving excursion.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
Without a car - Hard With children - No With a dog - No data By bike - No data With a stroller - No Mobile signal - Poor This high crossing requires mountain experience, cold-weather camping and an independent retreat plan. Arrange a ride in Karakol if travelling without a car; there is no confirmed service linking the mountain trailheads. Dog and bicycle access is unverified. Do not depend on reception for help.

Nearby

Descending to Ak-Suu village is a different exit from Altyn-Arashan. The Telety crossing to Jeti-Oguz begins in Karakol Valley and requires its own plan; it is not an automatic continuation of this outing.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Book a ride from Karakol to the mountain approach on the Altyn-Arashan side. A scheduled service to the exact start has not been confirmed. Ak-Suu is a useful transport reference, but a village-centre departure is not the same as this mountain starting point.
By car
Arrange drop-off on the northern Arashan approach and pickup after descending into Karakol Gorge. How far a vehicle can climb depends on road conditions and the vehicle; settle the end of the ride with a driver who knows the area.
Parking
Agree car storage with your accommodation in Karakol for the duration of the crossing. A visitor parking area at the mountain start has not been verified. Confirm both rides and car storage before leaving town.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainДанные по набору высоты уточняются.
SurfaceТип покрытия пока не определён.
Риски The demanding stage climbs from Keldike to the pass and descends to the lake: rocks, scree and lingering snow slow progress. Cold weather can change the equipment and skills needed. Do not commit to the pass in deteriorating visibility; choose an overnight stop and retreat option while still in the valley.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Time for the route 3–4 days
With stops | 4–5 days Separate the valley approach, Ala-Kul crossing and Karakol Gorge exit into stages. This is a planning range for a direct crossing; return visits and side outings need additional days.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Choose summer or early September after checking pass conditions. Snow can remain high up in early summer, while autumn rapidly reduces daylight. Open hot springs in the valley do not establish that the high crossing is accessible.

What to bring

Базовый список для комфортного похода
Bring mountain footwear and poles for the rocky descent.
Carry a tent or confirmed accommodation, a warm sleeping bag and rain protection.
Plan food, water treatment, a headlamp, first aid and an offline map for the whole crossing.
