Route description

The Vadiniense leads from Potes through the Cantabrian Mountains towards the Esla valley and Mansilla de las Mulas. Old San Vicente Church stands beside the departure; the high branch reaches Collado Remona and Pandetrave. Riaño adds an unexpected story: Santa Águeda Church was brought here stone by stone from another village. Further down the Esla, Mercadillo Bridge recalls a road used by traders and pilgrims. This expanded version brings together several alternatives. Choose the mountain branch and final approach beforehand so that your journey follows a clear sequence.

Route at a glance

Главное за минуту
Its historic places change as you walk: Gothic Potes, high passages between Liébana and León, Riaño’s relocated church and an old Esla crossing. They show how a mountain pilgrimage gradually reaches the plain. Choosing alternatives is part of the experience: stay longer in the valley or devote a separate day to a high crossing, without trying to treat different branches as consecutive stages.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
The complete walking programme suits experienced travellers able to select mountain weather and arrange daily stages independently. A cycling plan needs its own choice of roads; continuous rideability of the rocky paths and complete high alternative is unconfirmed. Check accommodation rules for dogs and protected-area access separately.

Nearby

Santo Toribio de Liébana lies away from this Potes departure; allow a separate monastery approach. San Miguel de Escalada also needs an additional visit and admission check, even when a selected stage passes nearby. The Vadiniense association issues its certificate subject to stamping conditions; completing a walk does not provide it automatically. Arrange church interiors and museum visits around their opening times.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Potes has a bus station and a Palomera / Jiménez Movilidad connection from Santander. Confirm the current service and subsequent walking approach before travelling: an old published timetable does not guarantee the departure you need. Arrange the Mansilla exit beforehand and do not depend on collection after every mountain stage.
By car
Arrive in Potes and approach Old San Vicente Church from La Serna, respecting town signs. The journey finishes in Mansilla de las Mulas, so arrange collection or a return to your car beforehand. Road access to a mountain village does not establish permission to drive further along the pilgrim path.
Parking
The official Potes guide identifies La Serna car park beside the San Vicente churches. Before a long walk, check long-stay permission, charges and restrictions during events. This town car park does not establish a suitable vehicle location at every intermediate stage. Keep local access roads and entrances clear.

Mercadillo Bridge over the Esla the historic bridge whose name recalls a former market.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainДанные по набору высоты уточняются.
SurfaceAsphalt 14%, Dirt / grass 11%, Gravel 1%, Unknown 73%.
Риски Choose stable mountain weather without snow or dangerous warnings. The stone road near Villayandre includes narrow rocky passages, made harder by wet surfaces. Check road crossings, Esla-bank sections and your chosen mountain alternative separately. If passage is blocked, return to a confirmed road; a direction on a map does not establish a safe bypass.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 3 d 12 h
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
Allow 12–16 days of walking for an expanded programme covering several branches, returns and spare time for mountain weather. This is an editorial allowance for the full undertaking, rather than the duration of a single standard passage. First choose the direction from Potes towards Portilla de la Reina, then distribute accommodation around Riaño, Cistierna, Gradefes and Mansilla. Plan the San Glorio alternative separately from the high Pandetrave crossing; the final branches also need a choice.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Choose a snow-free period with settled weather for the high sections. In spring and autumn, check passes and accommodation availability separately; good weather in Potes does not guarantee the same conditions higher up. Start earlier on hot summer days and consider stone-path and riverside conditions after prolonged rain.

What to bring

Базовый список для комфортного похода
Broken-in walking footwear
Rain and wind protection
A warm layer for mountain crossings
An offline map of your selected alternatives
Spare phone power and a light
Water and food between confirmed stops
A first-aid kit and accommodation confirmations
