Route description

The Via Mariana links Sameiro Sanctuary above Braga with Muxía in Galicia through Portuguese and Galician pilgrimage places. Its opening includes Bom Jesus do Monte church and Baroque stairways, followed by Prado Bridge over the Cávado. The mountain part reaches Peneda; later passages run beside Santa María da Franqueira and Escravitude. Ponte Maceira adds a medieval Tambre crossing. This version finishes beside the Romanesque Santa María de Muxía Church; continuing to the ocean-side Virxe da Barca Sanctuary needs a separate walk. Check the organiser’s warning about a collapsed path near Arbo before the journey.

Route at a glance

Главное за минуту
Visit pilgrimage sanctuaries on both sides of the border and compare their different settings: Bom Jesus’s stair ensemble, mountain Peneda and Galician Franqueira. Distinct historic crossings appear between them, including Prado and Ponte Maceira. This is also a cultural walking journey: linger over architecture and distribute stops according to your interests, arranging accommodation and visiting times beforehand.

Nearby

Virxe da Barca lies beyond this version’s Santa María de Muxía finish; allow a separate sanctuary approach. Santiago Cathedral is also away from this town passage and needs its own visit. The Marian certificate requires stage confirmation under the organiser’s conditions and is not automatic. Sameiro’s September 2026 notice gives basilica opening at 09:00 Monday–Saturday and 07:00 Sunday, closing at 18:00 October–March. Check changes and religious-service times before visiting.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Reach Braga on CP’s railway direction from the Porto area. Then arrange a separate transfer to Sameiro: the railway station is away from this version’s departure. Confirm the service and final transfer for your travel date. Choose confirmed return arrangements from Muxía and possible intermediate exits beforehand.
By car
The departure is beside Sameiro Basilica above Braga. Choose a permitted sanctuary drop-off and walk the final part. The journey finishes in Muxía, so arrange collection or a return to your car beforehand. Vehicle support through stairways, protected places and mountain paths has not been established; plan road transfers separately from walking.
Parking
Vehicle storage for the whole journey has not been established at the departure. Check long-stay arrangements with your selected operator before travelling. Respect signs and restrictions during religious events. Road access to a sanctuary complex does not establish permission to leave a car for any duration; arrange the return to your vehicle beforehand.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 11730 м.
SurfaceAsphalt 26%, Paving stones 3%, Compacted dirt 1%, Unknown 65%.
Риски The organiser reports a collapsed Sendero da Moura path beside the Deva at Arbo and recommends a road alternative. Obtain current directions before starting; do not follow an old line along the damaged bank. Mountain sections need settled weather, and rain makes stairways and stone crossings slippery. Near Tibo and other grazing areas, heed the warning about guarding dogs: avoid approaching animals and herds.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 5 d 5 h
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
Allow 18–22 days of walking with accommodation selected beforehand and spare time for weather. This is an editorial allowance for this long version, rather than a promise of matching every modern stage. Distribute early days between Sameiro, Bom Jesus and northern Portugal, then the Peneda, Melgaço and Galician sanctuary passages. Before heading west, select the Santiago-area passage; visiting the cathedral itself needs a separate approach. After Santa María de Muxía, add time for Barca if you wish to complete the official pilgrimage.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Choose moderate temperatures and settled weather for the mountain sections. In spring and autumn, check bank-side paths, accommodation opening and the effects of heavy rain separately. Start exposed summer passages earlier and account for protected-area restrictions. The ocean-side conclusion needs its own wind and wave forecast, even after a calm day inland in Galicia.
