Route description

The Geira e dos Arrieiros connects Braga Cathedral with Santiago through northern Portugal and Galicia. In Braga it passes Pópulo Church; in Gerês, São Miguel and Albergaria crossings preserve traces of Roman masonry. The road’s story then changes: Ribeiro and Terra de Montes recall the wine carriers heading towards Compostela. Pause at the stone Pontevea bridge over the Ulla before Santiago, and at Mazarelos Gate on the city approach. This pilgrimage needs independent navigation and accommodation arranged beforehand: its promoters report damaged waymarking on part of the route.

Route at a glance

Главное за минуту
Walk from Braga towards Compostela through two historical stories: the Roman Geira and Ribeiro’s wine-carrier roads. São Miguel’s wooden crossing is interesting for its combination of modern rebuilding and surviving old masonry. Pontevea adds a different medieval river crossing, while Mazarelos Gate provides a recognisable city landmark near the journey’s conclusion.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
The complete walk suits prepared independent travellers able to book accommodation and check junctions. A separate cycling plan exists, but it does not establish continuous rideability of this walking version. Arrange organised visits to protected areas beforehand and check accommodation conditions for animals separately.

Nearby

Sightseeing inside Braga Cathedral needs a separate ticket and respect for religious-service times. Individual entry to Santiago’s basilica is free; the museum, Portico of Glory and roof visits have separate arrangements, and a large walking backpack can prevent access. Choose thermal bathing near Lobios, Gerês waterfalls and additional churches as separate detours after checking their exact approaches and access.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Reach Braga on CP’s railway line from the Porto area, then make a separate city approach to the cathedral. Check the timetable for your date. Plan the Santiago return and possible intermediate departures before starting. Do not rely on bus collection in every small village; confirm the exact place and time.
By car
The town departure is beside Braga Cathedral at Rua D. Paio Mendes. Choose a legal drop-off point according to local signs, then approach on foot. The full route finishes in Santiago; arrange a separate return or collection. Car support along the Roman road and protected Gerês sections has not been established.
Parking
Parking for a car throughout the walk has not been established at the start. Ask before travelling whether you may leave your car at the selected Braga location for the whole journey. Check conditions and time restrictions. Arrange a separate legal meeting place in Santiago; proximity to the cathedral does not establish car access.

Риски Choose mountain weather without dangerous warnings and allow for wet stone beside watercourses. The promoters report damaged or altered waymarking in Padrenda, Cortegada and Ribadavia: check the current map rather than following arrows alone. Arrange organised access to the protected São Miguel area with ICNF. Do not improvise a bypass across private or protected land when passage is closed.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 3 d 11 h
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
Allow 10–12 days of walking, with accommodation booked beforehand and spare time for weather. Consider Braga, Caldelas, Campo do Gerês, Lobios, Castro Laboreiro, Cortegada, Pazos de Arenteiro, Beariz, Codeseda, Pontevea and Santiago as the planning sequence. Divide individual days according to available lodging and your preparation. Arrange church visits and early departures separately.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Moderate temperatures and settled weather suit the journey. Mountain Gerês needs its own forecast even when Braga’s weather is good. Start stages earlier in heat and decide where to replenish water beforehand. Prolonged rain affects stone passages and rivers. Check current protected-area restrictions before walking.
