Route description

This Platthorn ascent begins already high above Zermatt, on the approach from Triftchumme. The path continues over a rocky Alpine slope to the summit, where clear weather reveals the ridges of Obergabelhorn and Wellenkuppe. Build it into a complete mountain day: reaching the departure and descending after the summit are separate parts of the plan. The selected itinerary finishes on Platthorn; neighbouring Mettelhorn needs an independent decision about continuing.

Route at a glance

Главное за минуту
Platthorn offers a high-summit perspective on Zermatt’s western surroundings, with Obergabelhorn’s rock ridges and Wellenkuppe’s snow formations especially striking in clear weather. The summit and its open panorama are the main reward. Choose the ascent when prepared for an Alpine path and with the lower approach already organised.

Nearby

Mettelhorn is outside the selected ascent. The tourist operator specifically identifies a glacier section on its approach, so continuing needs a separate condition check and preparation. Trift mountain inn is useful for current information and planning the lower approach. Arrange any stop or overnight stay beforehand.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Reach Zermatt by train via Täsch. The upper departure requires a separate mountain approach through the Trift area from the station, outside this short upper ascent. Match the complete day to the return into the village. Choose the last train only after allowing sufficient margin for the lower descent.
By car
Plan the vehicle journey to Täsch, followed by rail travel to Zermatt. Triftchumme requires a walking approach; a road drop-off directly beside the Alpine path is not established. Prepare the complete ascent, summit and valley return before leaving Täsch.
Parking
Matterhorn Terminal Täsch provides parking beside the railway station for this arrival plan. Check current conditions and cover the whole mountain outing, including the departure approach and lower descent. Vehicle collection at Platthorn or the upper path is not established. Arrange a longer stay separately if spending a night in the mountains.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 597 м.
SurfaceТип покрытия пока не определён.
Риски This is a demanding Alpine path with rocky ground requiring secure movement at altitude. Snow, ice and poor visibility change conditions even on the short upper section. Check with Trift mountain inn before setting out and use a mountain guide when needed. Continuing to Mettelhorn introduces a separate glacier approach requiring its own preparation.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 1 h 48 min
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
For the selected upper ascent, allow an estimated 2–3 hours including a Platthorn pause in suitable conditions. This editorial allowance excludes the Zermatt approach and return descent. Calculate the complete day separately around path conditions and the lower return. Keep adequate daylight for descending from the summit.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Choose settled summer or early-autumn weather after checking upper-path snow and ice. Clear visibility matters for both the panorama and orientation on rocky ground. Postpone the summit during early snowfall, thunderstorms or fog. Recheck actual conditions at Trift before each outing.
