Route description

The Oberrothorn walk starts in the Rothorn upper-station area and first leads to the Furggji saddle. Beyond the pass it becomes a proper mountain ascent: rock and scree replace the convenience of the lifts, while Zermatt’s Alpine surroundings gradually open above the slope. Oberrothorn itself is the final destination. Metal sculptures along the themed path explore nature and humanity’s place in the universe. Returning to the station and descending to the valley are separate parts of the outing.

Route at a glance

Главное за минуту
Move from the busy station to an open summit and experience the scale of the mountains around Zermatt. Furggji gives the walk a clear intermediate landmark, followed by a close encounter with rocky high-mountain terrain. Choose a clear day, when the distant ridges make the summit especially rewarding.

Nearby

Unterrothorn and the equipped Rothorn photo spot require separate small deviations from the selected path; neither should be confused with Oberrothorn. Plan other walks from Blauherd or Sunnegga independently. Adding them depends on time, path conditions and lift operation.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Reach Zermatt by train via Täsch; when operating, the mountain connection continues via Sunnegga and Blauherd to Rothorn. Under the summer 2026 timetable the upper section finished on 4 October and the Sunnegga funicular on 11 October. Check every required section and the final descent before your next visit. Walking up from the valley needs a different day plan and is outside this summit ascent.
By car
Plan the drive to Täsch, then take the train to Zermatt. Access to the departure depends on seasonal mountain transport. A road drop-off directly beside the upper trail is not established. Coordinate trains, lifts and the valley return before travelling.
Parking
Matterhorn Terminal Täsch provides parking at the rail approach. Check the tariff and allow for the Zermatt train, mountain lifts, walk and return. A parking ticket does not provide access to Rothorn. Rework the complete mountain plan first if the upper connection is not operating.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainДанные по набору высоты уточняются.
SurfaceImproved surface 8%, Unknown 92%.
Риски The main challenge is the rocky climb after Furggji, where scree requires steady footing and an unhurried pace. Altitude, wind and remaining snow can make the walk harder than it appears at the station. Children need mountain-walking experience and close supervision. Postpone the ascent in fog, thunderstorms or icy conditions, and retain enough time for the return and final lift.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 1 h 44 min
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
Allow an estimated 1.5–2 hours from the Rothorn area to Oberrothorn, including brief pauses. Reserve about another 1–1.5 hours to regain the station, plus a margin before the last descent. These allowances cover the upper walk; calculate trains, lifts and connection waits separately. Snow or poor visibility invalidates normal walking-time estimates.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
The operator recommends June–September for summer mountain walking. Check snow and wind forecasts even within that period. Autumn lift operation may end earlier than expected; a winter transport opening does not make the summer path suitable for an ordinary walk.

What to bring
