Route description

The short Hobbit Trail occupies the Stafelalp area below the Matterhorn’s northern side. Here, riding means paying close attention to a natural path: bends, stones and roots require decisions before each move. Near the start, an interpretation stop presents legends about the Matterhorn’s origins; beyond it lies the named Stafelalp pasture area. Local guides include Hobbit in longer technical rides from Schwarzsee toward Zmutt. This outing is limited to a small section with returned passages in the same area; the continuation to valley villages needs its own plan.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
This is a technical mountain-bike section for confident adult riders. A relaxed family outing with a dog or stroller is unsuitable. The approach from Schwarzsee and return to Zermatt lie outside this short section and must be arranged beforehand.

Nearby

Schwarzsee, Zmutt village and the Yo-Yo and Aroleid descents belong to longer independent extensions. They are outside this short section; choose a continuation that suits your experience and current conditions.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 211 м.
SurfaceТип покрытия пока не определён.
Риски Local guides classify the area as technical riding for experienced participants, requiring braking, balance and control over stones, roots and steps. Repeated passages give no priority over walkers; yield and dismount where needed. Wet conditions make bicycle control more difficult.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Time for the route 45–75 min
With stops | 1.5–2 h This is a planning allowance for the short Stafelalp area, returned passages and careful progress through technical places. Add the lift, Schwarzsee approach and longer descent toward Zmutt and Zermatt separately. The local guide’s three-hour programme covers a complete bike outing, not this section.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Ride on a dry, snow-free path with operating lifts. The operator’s seasonal window depends on weather and may shorten with lingering spring snow or early autumn cold. Winter riding along this line is unconfirmed.

What to bring

Базовый список для комфортного похода
A maintained mountain bike, helmet, gloves and knee protection.
Water, snacks, a wind layer, warm clothing and rain protection.
A repair kit, spare power and an offline map for the approach and onward return.
