Route description

This walk links the Obersteinberg mountain-inn area with the Wilde Egg junction lower on the slope. The upper approach passes the guesthouse, whose hosts maintain a simple Alpine way of life without electricity and welcome guests in summer. The path then descends on a mountain trail including steps. It finishes at a hillside junction, so an organised valley descent or separate continuation is still needed.

Route at a glance

Include Obersteinberg in an outing through the rear Lauterbrunnen valley and make an unhurried transition from the mountain inn to the lower junctions. The remote walking-only guesthouse and its setting add interest. Arrange an indoor stop during its operating season; by October the normal published season has ended.

Nearby

Oberhornsee requires a separate mountain continuation outside this walk. Talbachfall and Tschingel-Lütschine are also off the selected line. A waterfall or lake visit needs its own approach and condition check. Plan the larger Tanzbödeli circuit as a different programme.

Getting there

Show on map
Without a car
Reach Lauterbrunnen by train and transfer to a bus for Stechelberg. A separate mountain ascent reaches Obersteinberg; the owner gives about 2.5 hours for the usual valley approach. That allowance does not describe this short descent. Plan the continuation from Wilde Egg and final bus beforehand.
By car
Drive to Stechelberg and continue on foot. The owner’s confirmed vehicle plan ends in the valley; a separate ascent reaches the inn. This descent still finishes in the mountains. Add the lower passage needed to regain your car.
Parking
The Obersteinberg owner identifies paid parking in Stechelberg for the lower approach. Check the exact space, current tariff and permitted duration. Cover the complete ascent, walk and valley descent. Arrange a longer stay for a confirmed overnight visit.

Difficult sections and safety

Elevation gain
The descent follows a mountain trail with steps and sections demanding secure footing. Take care after rain or on ice, and supervise children. Wilde Egg is still above the village. Choose an open lower continuation and allow enough time to complete it.

How much time to allow

Allow an estimated 45–75 minutes for the selected descent and short upper approach. Add the Stechelberg ascent, inn stop and lower descent separately. The complete day needs considerably more time. Meals or overnight service after the summer season require direct confirmation from the hosts.

Best time to go

Summer and early-autumn weather with snow-free paths is preferable. The hotel separately publishes a June–September season. In October, assess snow and ice and confirm any serviced stop. Actual slope conditions matter more than the calendar season.

Mountain footwear with secure grip
Warm layer and rain protection
