Route description

The Barroude lakes lie beneath mountain walls on the French side of the Pyrenees. This version combines visits around the lakes with a northward exit into the Géla valley, retaining returns over some sections. The water is the attraction here, rather than the name of the old refuge: Barroude remains a striking natural destination when overnight accommodation cannot be assumed. The start is already on high ground and the finish lower in the valley, so treat them as different journey points. It suits walkers who want to give the lake basin and its surroundings more time.

Nearby

Port de Barroude lies south of the lakes and belongs to a separate border crossing into Barrosa. Do not add the pass and a Spanish exit to the lake day without replanning the return.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 1367 м.
SurfaceDirt 6%, Unknown 94%.
Риски Snow can persist on mountain approaches, and returns over familiar ground add fatigue. Do not plan accommodation from the refuge’s old name: the official source confirms a fire and rebuilding programme, rather than the opening of a replacement.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Time for the route 7–9 h
With stops | 9–11 h This is a planning margin for the lake approaches, repeated passages and the exit into the Géla valley. The start is already on high ground; its approach is additional. A conventional valley-to-lakes return outing needs a separate plan.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Summer after checking approach snow is the clearest window. Early autumn requires settled weather; ask the park about construction and access restrictions.

What to bring

Базовый список для комфортного похода
Bring grippy footwear and wind protection.
Carry food for the entire mountain day and water treatment.
A spare warm layer and emergency kit help if delayed.
