Route description

Beside Duderhof, near St Petersburg, this outing crosses two wooded hills: Orekhovaya and Voronya. From the railway side, the circuit enters Nagorny Park, reaches Orekhovaya’s summit, continues over Voronya and returns towards its departure. Beneath maples, ashes and limes, the city feels surprisingly distant; this broadleaf woodland differs from the area’s familiar conifer forests. Orekhovaya combines a climb with the history of Empress Alexandra Fyodorovna’s former park. Voronya brings wartime remembrance and a view towards Duderhof Lake. The Swiss House no longer survives as a building: the directorate reports only its remaining foundation. Take time at the viewpoint and Victory Alley. Although compact, the circuit has steep slopes and calls for proper walking shoes.

Route suitability

For walkers confident on earth slopes and stairs. Help children on steep or slippery ground. The directorate prohibits walking domestic animals here. Plan the complete two-hill circuit on foot; a stroller outing requires a separate choice away from these slopes.

Nearby

St George’s Hospital and Duderhof’s historic buildings offer a separate extension through the settlement. The Theatre Valley and sites of lost park pavilions suit a more detailed historical visit. This circuit does not promise hospital grounds, building interiors or a lakeshore walk.

Getting there

Show on map
Without a car
The directorate recommends a suburban train from Baltiysky Station towards Gatchina-Baltiyskaya, alighting at Duderhof. Departure is on the railway side, without a further long approach. Check that your chosen service stops here and establish return times before travelling.
By car
Approach via Tallinn Highway through Krasnoye Selo, then Pervogo Maya Street, Krasnykh Komandirov Avenue and 25 Oktyabrya Avenue. The roadside area at Duderhof Station suits this circuit’s departure. Continue on foot into the hills; the directorate restricts vehicle access and standing to authorised locations.
Parking
The directorate confirms parking beside Duderhof Station, near this walk’s departure. Check present conditions and available spaces locally. Its second listed area, beside St George’s Hospital, belongs to a different approach and does not replace this departure.

Difficult sections and safety

Elevation gain
SurfaceDirt 40%, Asphalt 18%, Compacted dirt 3%, Unknown 37%.

How much time to allow

Allow approximately 1.5–2.5 hours for this two-hill circuit with viewpoint and historical pauses. This is an editorial estimate for an unhurried outing, rather than the timing of the shorter published scheme. Add the railway or road journey separately.

Best time to go

Spring brings early flowers, summer offers broadleaf shade and autumn colours the maples and limes. Individual rare plants or flowering are unpromised; observe from paths, since collecting is prohibited. Snow-free conditions make stairs and ground easier to judge. In winter, choose the walk only when steep slopes are safe.
