Route description

Beside Moscow’s Resurrection Gate, a walk begins that gradually grows into a journey to the Trinity Lavra of St Sergius. Familiar city landmarks come first, then the Yauza and the stone arches of Rostokino Aqueduct lead towards the green outskirts. The change from squares and avenues to woodland roads is gradual, and the rhythm of the journey changes with it. Beyond Moscow, the road connects old settlements and small rivers. The Annunciation Church in Tayninskoye, the St Sergius memorial in Radonezh and Khotkovo Convent give successive stages their own stories. Kelarsky Pond welcomes you to Sergiev Posad before the Lavra appears. Its white-stone churches and monastery ensemble invite particularly close attention when reached on foot. The journey suits pilgrimage as well as an unhurried exploration of Moscow and its surrounding region.

Nearby

A pilgrimage passport adds another thread to the journey; check collection points and stamp availability on the organiser’s website. Allow a separate day for Sergiev Posad museums so the Lavra can be explored calmly after the final walk. Book accommodation for your chosen stage endpoint and verify its walking approach.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Access the beginning from Okhotny Ryad metro. After visiting the Lavra, walk separately to Sergiev Posad railway station for a suburban train to Moscow’s Yaroslavsky terminal. Rutrail identifies Pushkino, Sofrino and Khotkovo stations for intermediate outings; establish the approach from your selected stage and check current timetables beforehand.
By car
A vehicle is more useful for delivery to an individual day stage than for the complete walk without a retrieval plan. Choose a lawful urban approach to your selected starting point; woodland and park paths are not a continuation of the drive.
Parking
Free or dedicated parking for the complete walking journey has not been confirmed. When arriving for a single stage, check lawful spaces and conditions near the selected entrance. Vehicle retrieval needs a separate plan.

What to expect

Places
Kilometre Zero The marker beside the Resurrection Gate is the symbolic start of the Lavra Road, a place to pause before leaving the historic centre.
Rostokino Aqueduct Stone arches above the Yauza recall the Mytishchi water supply. The Moscow Sport walking project describes the gallery supported by 21 arches; the structure is also rewarding to view from below.
Annunciation Church in Tayninskoye The church in Tayninskoye is a historic stop on the pilgrimage route. If collecting a pilgrimage stamp, check the church shop’s availability beforehand.
St Sergius Memorial in Radonezh The memorial marks the Radonezh section of the walk, offering a quiet pause before continuing towards Khotkovo.
Khotkovo Intercession Convent The convent is associated with the parents of St Sergius. Its 1816 Intercession Cathedral is a five-domed Classical church; observe the convent’s rules when visiting or attending a service.
Kelarsky Pond This pond in Sergiev Posad is listed among the stops on the Lavra Road. A waterside pause makes a gentle transition from the long approach to exploring the town.
Trinity Lavra of St Sergius The monastery ensemble developed around the white-stone Trinity Cathedral of 1422–1423. Allow time to explore the Lavra separately from the walking stage.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 177 м.
SurfaceAsphalt 18%, Dirt 13%, Improved surface 4%, Unknown 56%.
Риски The main challenge is the cumulative effort of successive walking days. Rain-softened woodland roads and city crossings require different kinds of care. The Moscow beginning does not have assured waymarking; use a map and check junctions. Fires are prohibited in protected sections. Observe monastery visiting rules and do not assume entry into every building.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 1 d 9 h
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
A recommended complete walking plan is 5 days, extending to 6–8 days for more pauses. A typical stage covers 20–25 km and takes around 6–8 hours with breaks; choose daily boundaries according to fitness and arranged accommodation. Day 1: Moscow and the northern outskirts. Days 2–3: regional stages towards Pushkino and Sofrino. Day 4: Radonezh and Khotkovo. Day 5: the approach to Sergiev Posad, Kelarsky Pond and the Lavra. These are thematic stages, not bookings at specific hotels. The organiser allows hotel nights; the journey can also be walked on separate weekends with a return home after each stage. Leave additional time for the Lavra itself.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Dry days from late spring to early autumn are easier to plan, with drier woodland roads and longer daylight. In summer protect against sun and insects; prolonged rain slows progress on unpaved ground. Check woodland conditions in winter and transitional seasons, and adjust the summer stage plan. Before major pilgrimage holidays check Lavra visitor numbers and accommodation availability.

What to bring

Drinking water for each stage and food between settlements.
Rain protection, a sun hat and seasonal insect protection.
