Route description

You can discover the old Metropolitan Road gradually, choosing modest sections for independent outings. In this version, the eastern walk follows the road side towards Dmitrovskoye and the Church of St Demetrius of Thessaloniki. Village surroundings connect today’s landscape with the former metropolitan lands, while the stone church provides a clear architectural reference. The other two sections lie far to the west among woodland paths on the Aksinyino side. One passes near the Konnik garden community and the other beside Pion’s wooded surroundings. Shared history links these places, but movement between them and the eastern section needs separate arrangements. Choose one portion for a brief outing, or organise transfers and approaches for all three beforehand. The western finish remains in woodland. This approach leaves time to examine the road instead of rushing to complete the larger pilgrimage journey.

St Nicholas Church and the Moscow Defence Line memorial in Aksinyino require an independent continuation into the village; they are outside these western woodland endings. The longer Metropolitan Road version adds other passages and has its own difficulties. Maslovsky Forest Park has separate entrances, and its facilities and services are not promised on these portions. Arrange church entry in Dmitrovskoye according to current parish conditions.
