Route description

Leave Chismena towards Gusenevo, then enter the woods between the villages of the Volokolamsk area. Allow time to stop at the Ivan Panfilov memorial, the Anino obelisk and, towards the end of the day, the monumental soldier figures at Dubosekovo. Together, these places tell a story of the defence of Moscow, with fields and low-lying woodland separating the memorial visits. The final approach to Dubosekovo crosses open country. The sculpture group comes into view before you reach its forecourt; afterwards, continue towards the Height 251 plaque and the railway stop. Choose this full version for a substantial woodland walk with a historical focus. The ground between the memorials can be wet, streams need careful assessment, and the roadside section near Anino calls for advance planning.

Route at a glance

Главное за минуту
Walk from the intimate setting of the Gusenevo memorial to the open landscape of Dubosekovo. A village street and a single monument begin the historical sequence; a broad slope and a group of soldiers above the fields complete it. The woodland passages give you time to reflect on the places you have seen and spend a day away from the city.

Nearby

The separate interactive bunker museum beside the Dubosekovo memorial requires an admission ticket and a check of opening hours. The regional tourism portal lists adult entry at 200 roubles; confirm the price before visiting. A different Panfilov museum stands at 18 Krestyanskaya Street in Nelidovo, displaying letters, documents and personal belongings of wartime participants. It lies outside this walk and needs a separate approach and time allowance.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Plan to arrive at Chismena station and leave from Dubosekovo on the Riga railway line. Check services for your travel date, including the return train and any timetable alterations. Matryonino provides an intermediate railway option for shortening the outing; confirm the approach to its platform separately. At Chismena, reach the north side of the station to begin the walk.
By car
Arrange a drop-off using the accessible roads into Chismena, then reach the north side of the station. The finish is at Dubosekovo, so book a collection or plan a rail journey back. If using two cars, agree both meeting points and a permitted waiting place near the memorial. The woodland portions are for walking.
Parking
Parking at the start is unconfirmed. An asphalt parking area is mapped near the final approach to Dubosekovo. Check current restrictions and permission to leave a vehicle all day; the presence of a parking area does not establish either. Keep memorial and railway access routes clear.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainДанные по набору высоты уточняются.
SurfaceAsphalt 14%, Dirt / grass 8%, Improved surface 7%, Unknown 71%.
Риски Watch for wet clearings, tall vegetation, slippery logs and stream crossings. The original guide records a collapsed Bakhareva bridge and a ford; their present condition is unconfirmed. Turn back towards an accessible exit if a safe crossing is unavailable. Near Anino, the walk includes a section beside Volokolamskoye Highway and a road crossing without a confirmed designated pedestrian facility. Check that section before setting out; any alternative must be permitted and safe.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 6 h 15 min
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
The author’s baseline for the complete outing is 7–8 hours. Treat this as an initial estimate, since present crossing conditions can change the time required. Start early, allow for diversions and memorial visits, and identify the intermediate exit at Matryonino in advance. Add an indoor bunker visit separately, subject to opening hours. Leave a margin before your return train.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Dry weather, low stream levels and ample daylight offer the best basis for planning. Spring thaw and prolonged rainfall make the woodland sections harder. In summer, cover your legs against vegetation and insects; an early start becomes particularly important in autumn. Snow cover does not establish safe passage over wet ground or streams.

What to bring

Базовый список для комфортного похода
High waterproof footwear
Covered clothing for overgrown woodland
Drinking water and food for the day
Map showing intermediate exits
Charged phone and power bank
Rainwear, first-aid kit and torch
Insect repellent
Dry socks in a waterproof bag
