Route description

The Urik below Khara-Zhalga is an independent river journey to the Bolshaya Belaya, with shore portages woven into its progression. The start already lies beyond the upper Khara-Zhalga canyon. Tri Bandita rapid and the Ambartagol canyon come next; this version takes the left-bank continuation beside the latter. The narrow stone river remains nearby, but boats and heavy luggage must be carried, and movement on shore needs its own careful assessment. After returning to the water, the journey reaches Urik Waterfall. View the drop from shore and carry the boats around it: seeing the waterfall does not establish a runnable descent. Below it, the Urik receives the Khonchin, followed farther downstream by the Dayalyk. Their mouths help distinguish the river reaches without adding trips up those tributaries. Chertiki, Devil Gates rapid and Krokodily give the middle river recognisable named landmarks. The route then follows the Urik’s bends, passes the Elakhoy mouth and reaches the confluence with the Bolshaya Belaya. It continues beyond the junction: the final river portion follows the Bolshaya Belaya towards its left-bank side. Agree on the precise landing and collection before departure. The journey’s appeal lies in travelling from a canyon-side portage to another river, with prepared teamwork and sensible decisions on the water.

Route at a glance

Главное за минуту
Combine the shore bypass beside Ambartagol canyon, a shore view of Urik Waterfall and the mouths of several distinct tributaries. Tri Bandita, Chertiki, Devil Gates rapid and Krokodily lend the river its own names. Reaching the Bolshaya Belaya ends the story with a change of river rather than a return to the departure shore.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
Without a car - Hard With children - No With a dog - No data By bike - No With a stroller - No Mobile signal - No data For a coordinated group experienced in difficult water, shore reconnaissance, safety cover and carrying boats. Participants need to manage independent nights and delays. The complete journey is unsuitable for a first rafting trip, small children or a stroller. Suitability with a dog is unestablished. Reliable reception throughout the river and at the finish is unconfirmed.

Nearby

Khara-Zhalga canyon lies upstream of the start and needs a separate approach; its descent is outside this itinerary. Khonchin canyon is another separate side excursion: the main river passes only the tributary mouth. Zhombolok and Lake Khara-Nur are not additional stops on this journey. Sobol post is described near the Dayalyk mouth in earlier river accounts. Confirm present operation, accommodation and assistance independently; do not make group autonomy depend on them. Inga belongs to return planning from the Bolshaya Belaya, and reaching the village requires a separate shore journey. Check access restrictions for the approach and overnight places. The Irkutsk emergency service provides for a separate water-trip notification to the small-craft inspectorate and confirmation after finishing. Agree on submission of the plan with the territorial services covering the start and later river portions.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Direct public access to the departure and from the finish shore is unconfirmed. Arrange regional arrival, the approach to the Urik below the upper canyon and departure after the Bolshaya Belaya separately. Your river equipment and portage luggage must fit the chosen vehicle. Old service information and chance lifts do not establish a present arrangement.
By car
When planning an approach from the Orlik side, agree on access specifically to the start below Khara-Zhalga canyon. Approaches to the upper river and through the mine differ; confirm industrial access permission and the forest approach’s condition in advance. Ordinary-car access to the start is unconfirmed. Leaving the Bolshaya Belaya’s left-bank side requires a separate meeting. Inga is a return-planning reference, but it is not this outing’s final point on the water.
Parking
Parking is unconfirmed. Arrange long-term vehicle storage, boat loading and collection before the approach. A group’s waterside rest does not establish a vehicle parking area; keep the vehicle and stored equipment out of flood-prone shore ground.

What to expect

Places
Tri Bandita a named rapid on the opening river portion before Ambartagol canyon.
Ambartagol canyon the Urik’s canyon reach beside this version’s left-bank bypass; assess the shore portage independently.
Urik Waterfall a river drop viewed from shore and bypassed while carrying the boats.
Khonchin mouth the arrival of a left tributary below the waterfall, without a trip up its canyon.
Dayalyk mouth the junction with a right tributary on an Urik bend.
Chertiki a named rapid reach where inspection and safety cover depend on present water conditions.
Devil Gates rapid a separate named rapid on the following rocky river reach.
Krokodily a rapid known by this name in river accounts and mapped as Krokodil.
Elakhoy mouth the arrival of another tributary on the lower Urik.
Confluence of the Urik and Bolshaya Belaya the change to another river, followed by the journey’s final water portion.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 431 м.
SurfaceТип покрытия пока не определён.
Риски The selected continuation beside Ambartagol canyon is a shore bypass. Steep descents, rocks and carrying heavy loads require reconnaissance; this is not established as an equipped walking path or a guarantee of safe access. If the shore continuation is unsuitable, use a separately agreed permitted alternative or abandon the complete journey. Stop before Urik Waterfall to inspect and organise a shore portage. Do not expect to hear the drop early enough or transfer old gravel-bank positions to present water. Running the waterfall is not part of this outing. Prepared crews decide on Tri Bandita, Chertiki, Devil Gates rapid and Krokodily after inspecting them. Water pressed against cliffs, rocks, debris in channels and rapidly changing levels may require further portages or ending the trip. Select a suitable channel on site in the lower braided reaches. Confirm the landing and shore connection to collection in advance as well.

How much time to allow

A day-by-day plan for the multi-day river journey is not established. Its complete duration is also unestablished. Before departure, allocate spare time among the opening river, the left-bank portage, the waterfall, middle-river rapids and the Bolshaya Belaya finish. Agree on overnight places according to current water, safe landings and present restrictions. Allow reserves for portages, boat repairs and waiting for appropriate conditions; another group’s old daily stages do not set this journey’s duration. Register the river plan with the emergency service and agree on check-in arrangements beforehand.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Plan for open-water conditions after checking current levels and rainfall forecasts across the Urik catchment. Dry weather near the start does not exclude rising water downstream. Postpone departure during prolonged rain, flooding or unsuitable levels; low water increases the importance of rocks and carrying boats. A calendar does not guarantee runnable rapids or a usable shore bypass. Winter passage of this water itinerary is unestablished.
