Route description

Kurma and Severobaikalsk stand at opposite ends of a substantial journey along Lake Baikal’s western shore. This version is intended as a multi-day cross-country ski crossing. From the lake side, projecting capes, bay entrances and the distant mountain shore become the main sights. The Kurma beginning gives way to protected coastline, while the northern ending reaches Severobaikalsk’s city beach. The coastline itself provides the interest. Ryty stands out among the southern capes; farther on come Bolshoy and Maly Solontsovy, Zavorotny, the Kedrovy capes and the Ledyanaya mouth. Beyond Elokhin, the course passes the Cheremshanny capes towards Kotelnikovsky, Tolsty and Ludar. Each turn reveals another shore landmark as northern Baikal gradually becomes a different world. Prepare the entire journey only after independently confirming safe snow and ice, permitted shore exits, connections between stages and overnight places. The southern section towards Shartlay particularly needs fresh preparation: a precise usable passage is unestablished. Entering the reserve shore requires special permission and staff accompaniment. Historical ranger posts do not establish agreed accommodation. If the complete crossing cannot be prepared, choose a separately permitted stage with an independent return or finish early.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
Without a car - Hard With children - No With a dog - No By bike - No With a stroller - No Mobile signal - No data For an experienced ski group prepared for prolonged movement on snow and exposed ice, wind, independent overnight arrangements and abandoning continuation. This is a demanding winter journey, unsuitable as a family outing. Bicycle, walking and summer water versions are independently unverified. An animal complicates ice and protected-area arrangements. Continuous mobile reception and prompt assistance throughout the coast are unestablished.

Nearby

Hot springs on the Kotelnikovsky side are separate from the cape projection. Confirm present visit conditions, bathing access and guest reception with the receiving party; do not rely on them as guaranteed services. View coastal lights and towers only where a permitted approach is established. Climbing the structures is independently unverified. Onguren, Kocherikovo, Solnechnaya Weather Station and historical huts do not establish a dependable chain of supply or vehicle exits. Confirm every needed shore exit, overnight place and water arrangement separately. The Onkholoy–Ryty walking excursion, Mount Chersky ascent and Lena-source journey are independent routes outside this ski version. Khakusy lies across Baikal and is excluded from the selected ending. A post-crossing Goudzhekit visit and Severobaikalsk sightseeing need separate plans. Respect coastal memorial places and natural features, and remove all rubbish.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Direct public transport to the lake-side Kurma start and departure from intermediate coastal points are unconfirmed. Arrange delivery to the start and departure from Severobaikalsk separately, confirming a specific service or receiving party. The crossing ends beside the beach; reaching your city departure point requires additional preparation. Historical participant travel arrangements do not establish a current timetable. Agree cancellation and return arrangements from each selected separate stage before departure.
By car
Agree vehicle delivery to the Kurma side and collection after the Severobaikalsk finish independently. Ranger posts, capes and winter huts are unverified as vehicle collection points. Leaving a vehicle at the southern start does not resolve return from the northern ending. Avoid driving onto lake ice: this skiing plan establishes neither permitted nor safe vehicle passage. Select a confirmed land-accessible meeting place beforehand.
Parking
Parking is unconfirmed. On the Kurma side, agree storage with the owner of an accessible place for the whole journey. A historical resort near the beginning does not guarantee current parking. Severobaikalsk’s beach and coastal huts are also unverified as prearranged vehicle storage.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 479 м.
SurfaceТип покрытия пока не определён.
Риски Kurma to Shartlay requires independent preparation of usable passage. Safe continuous connections between the separate coastal stages are unestablished. Seeing the next cape does not justify crossing a bay directly. Changes in wind or ice can prevent return to the start. Cracks, pressure ridges, meltwater, stream mouths and poor visibility create hazards on exposed Baikal. Smooth ice and opposing or offshore wind can sharply hinder skiing. If a safe surface or connection is unconfirmed, omit the complete crossing, choose an independently prepared permitted stage or finish early. Agree shore exits and overnight stops within Baikalo-Lensky Nature Reserve with its administration beforehand. Special permission and staff accompaniment are required; visits outside developed authorised routes are not provided for. National park permission applies to the territories and routes specified in it. A locked hut, ranger post or weather station does not guarantee shelter. Confirm current shore and ice restrictions before departure.

How much time to allow

Расчётное время в пути 2 d 10 h
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
The present full duration and a prepared daily plan for this exact version are unestablished. Calculate the multi-day journey afresh for each coastal section and group reserves; former participants’ sporting pace is not a promised completion time. First confirm a permitted southern passage and stage connections, then agree day endings, overnight places, water and delay reserves. Prepare return from every selected stage and departure from Severobaikalsk separately. Register the journey with EMERCOM and agree check-in messages and conditions for stopping the crossing.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Only after independently checking stable snow and ice throughout the selected Baikal section and permitted shore exits. Fixed safe winter or spring dates are unestablished. Spring warming can damage apparently strong ice; a successful historical April outing does not confirm a present season. Postpone when water appears on the surface, the forecast is adverse or dependable current assessment is unavailable. A summer repeat of this skiing version is unprepared.
