Route description

The Dabat and Kurma valleys connect the Olkha Plateau’s forest roads with Irkutsk Reservoir. This ski version begins inside the plateau, crosses the wooded Polovinnaya–Dabat watershed and starts a sustained descent along the river valley. The narrower valley gradually opens into lower terrain beside the Kurma, followed by the wide setting of Kurminsky Bay. The journey has two distinct settings: climbs, descents and route choices in woodland, then a broad snow-covered expanse of water with distant shores. The continuation heads towards the left shore on the Irkutsk side. Arrange arrival from Orlyonok separately, as the starting point is in the forest. The ice section requires an officially permitted passage and safe shore exit; the complete version must not be undertaken until these are confirmed.

Route at a glance

Главное за минуту
For the transition from the Olkha Plateau’s inner valleys to Kurminsky Bay. Dabat provides the long woodland descent, while Kurma leads into the reservoir setting. These successive places give the itinerary its character. Prepared groups can consider the complete winter journey after confirming park access, a permitted ice corridor and their return arrangements.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
Without a car - Hard With children - No With a dog - No data By bike - No With a stroller - No Mobile signal - No data Experience of sustained ski passages, independent navigation and changing plans when access is prohibited or conditions deteriorate is necessary. This is unsuitable as a children’s outing. Dog access along the entire passage is unknown. The bicycle assessment concerns the described winter section; the summer land continuation follows another direction.

Nearby

Vityaz and Zerkala belong to branches off the initial forest road; their separate rock approaches are absent from this version. The summer route via Zun-Muren and Melnichny Road also follows another continuation. The equipped Epiphany site at Yakobi in January 2026 did not open a long ski passage across the reservoir. As checked on 14 October, access to this particular winter corridor, base reception and functioning huts remain unconfirmed. Check present restrictions with the national park, including the bear-related tourist closures published in September.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
A complete public transport plan is unconfirmed. Orlyonok appears in official Baikal suburban services, but the ski section itself begins farther inside the forest. Establish the separate approach from Orlyonok, services for the chosen date and a permitted exit to the city shore after the finish. A specific city stop and pedestrian connection are unconfirmed.
By car
Exact vehicle access is unconfirmed. Establish arrival at the forest start and a meeting on the Irkutsk shore side before planning. Permission and road condition require confirmation in the forest. Vehicle ruts on the reservoir do not establish an authorized ice crossing; a historical description cannot support arranging pickup from the water by car.
Parking
Parking is unconfirmed. Identify a lawful place for the car on your selected arrival side and a return to it beforehand.

What to expect

Places
Polovinnaya to Dabat Watershed A wooded watershed between river basins before the descent to Dabat. It marks the end of the plateau-road climb; an open summit viewpoint is unconfirmed.
Dabat River The river valley followed on the descent from the Olkha Plateau. Wooded slopes and a winding valley lead into lower terrain; confirm the condition of river passages separately.
Kurma River The valley before the reservoir bay. The setting becomes broader and more open after the narrower Dabat valley; this is a river section without promised serviced rest stops.
Kurminsky Bay of Irkutsk Reservoir The bay replaces woodland valleys with a broad expanse of water. The winter version continues across the reservoir towards Irkutsk; a permitted ice passage and safe shore exit are currently unconfirmed.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 332 м.
SurfaceТип покрытия пока не определён.
Риски The unresolved section across the reservoir ice is crucial. MChS publishes a prohibition on pedestrian and vehicle ice access outside specially equipped places; an authorized equipped corridor for this version is not established. Do not plan the complete passage without confirming its permission and a safe shore exit. In woodland, unprepared snow, difficult branches and river passages on the Dabat side may complicate progress. Historical bridges and huts are not verified support. The itinerary is associated with a national-park road: agree the boundaries of your passage and permission with the park authority.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 10 h 22 min
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
A day-by-day plan is not established. No verified overnight places or functioning refuges support a multi-day schedule; do not divide the journey into days arbitrarily. First establish whether the complete winter version is permitted, then resolve arrival at the forest start, the Dabat descent, the Kurma approach and the continuation with a return from the shore side. A reliable total duration is unknown. Retain time and energy before reaching the bay; do not depend on an incidental lift on the ice.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Historically a winter ski itinerary. Established snow is necessary in woodland, but frost and other vehicles’ ruts do not confirm safety or permission across the water. Choose a date only after agreeing current access, ice conditions and a shore exit. The water section is unsuitable during ice formation or breakup. The summer cycling continuation returns over land and requires a different plan.

What to bring

Базовый список для комфортного похода
Skis for forest roads, poles and a repair kit.
Warm clothing with wind protection and dry spares: the open reservoir differs from sheltered woodland.
A flask, drinking water of your own, food and a delay reserve.
A map of branches, the permitted corridor and exits, a phone with reserve power, a light and first aid.
For an independently authorized ice section, emergency equipment and a group plan agreed with local specialists; equipment does not remove a prohibition. Verified equipment hire and warming facilities along the way are absent.
