Route description

The journey from Irkutsk to Khuzhir turns the approach to Lake Baikal into an island experience. After the city come mainland villages, Bayanday and Yelantsy, before the road reaches Sakhyurta. Here road travel gives way to a ferry: ahead lie the Olkhon Gates, the island shore and the remaining journey to Baikalskaya Street in Khuzhir. The crossing between the two shores is the most distinctive transition. On the water, Olkhon’s separation from the mainland becomes tangible: travel follows a rhythm set by navigation and weather. The onward island road completes the approach through the region’s changing woodland and steppe settings. Khuzhir is a convenient starting point for a separate island programme. This is a road journey with a ferry crossing. Treat it as part of the holiday itself, allowing time for waiting and an unhurried arrival. Choose walks to coastal headlands and other Olkhon attractions separately after reaching the village.

In Khuzhir, choose a separate museum visit or a walk in permitted coastal areas. The local Revyakin Museum lies off the selected road and is not included in the transfer. Cape Burkhan with Shamanka Rock and an outing to northern Olkhon need their own time, approach and access checks. Coach tickets and ferry transport do not replace permission for the national park’s natural routes.

Without a car
Scheduled passenger services connect Irkutsk and Khuzhir. For departure from the bus station, use 11 Oktyabrskoy Revolyutsii Street; the carrier confirms the service, boarding point and crossing arrangements. Khuzhir ticket offices are listed at 41 and 42 Baikalskaya Street for different operators. This journey’s endpoint and a particular coach platform can differ, so confirm arrival and the onward approach beforehand. Allow for ferry waiting and weather interruptions when choosing a return ticket.
By car
By car, follow operating roads through Bayanday, Yelantsy and Sakhyurta to the MRS–Olkhon ferry, then continue toward Khuzhir on the island road. The city bus station starting reference does not permit entry to coach platforms. Check present surfaces, roadworks and traffic arrangements before leaving; do not assume an entirely paved journey to the final address. Board the ferry only on crew instructions. Arrange national park permission for natural-area visits and follow the applicable access rules.
Parking
Parking is unconfirmed. The ferry queue and vehicle waiting area are not storage for a car throughout an island holiday. Agree parking in Khuzhir with the accommodation or use a permitted place under current signs. Keep the pier, entrance gates and natural ground outside permitted access clear.
