Route description

This journey suits those drawn to changing valleys in the winter Sayan Mountains, far from a town ski outing. From the Khubuty gorge, the route crosses Khubutsky Pass towards Barom-Gol, then reaches Arkhat, Ara-Khubuty and Ara-Oshey. The wooded Daban-Zhalga saddle leads into the Kitoy basin; Yaman-Gol and Obzorny Pass later introduce the way towards Narin-Gol and Shumak. Each name brings a different setting: exposed high ground, narrow river corridors, woodland crossings and mineral springs among the mountains. Winter water remains a defining difficulty. River icing can be wet, channels can stay open, and the final mountain connections need their own assessment. Confirm the complete present exit from the upper Left Shumak to Ekhe-Ger before departure. This is an outing for a prepared group carrying independent overnight supplies and spare days.

Route at a glance

Главное за минуту
Connect Khubuty, Kitoy and Shumak in a substantial ski expedition, with wooded and exposed passes linked by winter river valleys. The variety of mountain settings gives this direction its appeal. Previous experience of self-sufficient winter journeys is needed before setting out.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
The complete route calls for a prepared winter group. River icing, open water and mountain crossings exclude an ordinary family outing. Dog access and a dog’s ability to complete this terrain safely are unconfirmed. Arrival without an arranged transfer and continuous mobile reception are also unverified.

Nearby

Nilova Pustyn was the original group’s external arrival base, rather than a visited attraction within the ski portion. Present availability of individual winter huts and Shumak accommodation is unconfirmed; prepare an independent overnight option. Obtain the necessary Tunkinsky National Park permission for the complete relevant period and meet its mountain-trip registration requirements with EMERCOM. Clarify access arrangements for the Shumak springs area separately. Do not rely on labels or therapeutic claims when deciding whether to use mineral waters.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Public transport to the mountain start is unconfirmed. Arrange arrival in the Tunka valley and the onward Khubuty transfer separately, together with collection after the expedition. Services between settlements do not establish transport to the start of the ski portion.
By car
Vehicle access to the mountain start is unconfirmed. Agree the present permitted drop-off, road conditions and collection with a local driver. A successful transfer on an older expedition does not establish current access. Do not leave an ordinary vehicle assuming an unverified winter road will be passable.
Parking
Parking is unconfirmed. Arrange any long-term vehicle storage separately with your receiving contact after choosing the transfer.

What to expect

Places
Khubutsky Pass The crossing from the Khubuty valley towards Barom-Gol. Its exposed saddle changes the woodland approach into a high-mountain setting; wind and snow conditions govern passage.
Daban-Zhalga Pass A wooded saddle between Ara-Oshey and the Zhalga valley. After the canyon sections, trees frame the crossing into the Kitoy basin.
Obzorny Pass The crossing between Yaman-Gol and Narin-Gol on the older approach to Shumak. It marks the change from the Yaman-Gol ascent to another valley.
Shumak Mineral Springs The mineral-water outlets around the meeting of the Right and Left Shumak. The original expedition paused here for a rest day; establish current access to individual springs and stopping arrangements.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 4368 м.
SurfaceТип покрытия пока не определён.
Риски Wet river icing and water concealed by snow occurred on Ara-Khubuty and the Left Shumak; on Ara-Oshey the party had to seek another crossing. Kitoy has rock constrictions and a waterfall bypass, while Yaman-Gol includes steep ice. An older passage establishes no present ice strength. Develop the upper Left Shumak–Ekhe-Ger connection particularly carefully: a complete current passage plan is not established here. Fresh snow, cornices and avalanche signs can require delaying or abandoning the mountain crossing.

How much time to allow

Расчётное время в пути 1 d 4 h
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
This is a multi-day expedition. The original February 2016 expedition occupied eight calendar days, including transfer and a rest day at Shumak. That describes one historical journey rather than a present schedule. A day-by-day plan is not established. Prepare the Khubutsky-to-Kitoy stage, the Obzorny crossing towards Shumak and a separately verified exit to Ekhe-Ger. Each stage needs confirmed overnight arrangements, alternatives and a weather reserve.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
The account concerns a winter ski expedition made in late February. It establishes no safe calendar window for a future winter. Even in freezing weather the party found open water and wet icing, while fresh snow worsened avalanche conditions. Choose dates according to actual snow, river and pass conditions; a summer journey requires a different plan.
