Route description

This spring circuit from the Nilovka area combines a lower road journey through Khoyto-Gol with a substantial mountain hike. After the road approach, the direction follows the Bogo-Bulnay towards VASKhNIL Pass. The crossing leads into the Ara-Oshey basin, while the return mountain section runs through Ara-Khubuty, Barom-Gol and Khubutsky Pass to the southern foothills of the Tunka range. The attraction lies in moving between contrasting valleys: wooded approaches, austere pass ridges and long river sections form an independent mountain journey. Spring makes snow, water and weather especially important. Before travelling, establish a currently permitted passage between all stages and arrange the lower transfer separately.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
Independent multi-day mountain experience, navigation and assessment of snowy slopes and rivers are required. The journey is unsuitable for bicycles, strollers or an ordinary children’s outing. Dog access and continuous mobile reception are unconfirmed.

Nearby

Ara-Oshey and Altan-Mundarga summits, the Arkhat lakes and a journey to Shumak are separate objectives outside this circuit. Confirm current permitted directions, Tunka National Park rules and the arrangements for all protected areas involved. An old horse route establishes no permission to use every bank alternative or camp wherever convenient.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map

What to expect

Places
Bogo-Bulnay on the mountain approach The mountain river lies on the pass approach. Independent route assessment is needed here; a prepared path and safe water conditions are not guaranteed.
VASKhNIL Pass The stony crossing leads from the Bogo-Bulnay side into the Ara-Oshey basin. Clear weather reveals the pass surroundings, while spring slope conditions determine whether continuing is appropriate.
Ara-Oshey River on the valley stage The inner mountain crossing reaches this named river. The valley and bank obstacles shape the following stage; passage through every canyon riverbed is not implied.
Khubutsky Pass The crossing between Barom-Gol and Khubuty lies on the mountain return. It belongs to the historical old-road direction, with present passage requiring a fresh assessment.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 2977 м.
SurfaceТип покрытия пока не определён.
Риски Do not count on a continuous prepared path along Bogo-Bulnay. Connections between mountain stages and present passage need confirmation. VASKhNIL involves stone, steep ground and possible spring snow; river stages introduce water, ice and bank obstacles. Older passages establish no ready ford, and unfamiliar canyon riverbeds should not be used as shortcuts. Snowy slopes require avalanche assessment by a competent leader.

How much time to allow

This is a multi-day journey with a separate lower road stage. A day-by-day plan is not established. Prepare mountain stages, authorised camps and the complete return independently, preserving reserves for weather and water. Dates from an older May journey provide no present duration. The final meeting-point approach and connections between stages need planning before departure.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
May is a feature of this historical version rather than a recommendation to travel then without additional preparation. Spring can bring deep wet snow, river ice and high water. Summer changes crossings and bank alternatives. Choose the season according to present conditions and permitted access. Check newer park notices after the published15October2026 restriction expiry.
