Route description

The Tissa, Topografov Peak and Choigan form a winter journey through the Bolshoy Sayan mountains. It starts in the Shutkhulay-Nur area on the Tissa. The opening stage first follows the Khorin-Gol and Turgen-Gol towards 23 February Pass before returning to river valleys. Munku-Sasan remains a mountain landmark of this circuit; its summit was not reached in this version. Khandaigay-Nur Lake and the return via Soedinitelny Pass towards the Khokhyur-Zhalga add open winter country and confined river steps. Beyond the Tissa, the journey follows the Khelgin. Wooded river country gives way to Dodo-Khukhe-Nur and Dede-Khukhe-Nur lakes, then the glaciated Topografov massif. The summit outing requires independent mountain preparation and a current assessment of snow, cornices and the glacier. Unsuitable conditions justify leaving it out. Khelgin Pass leads to the Arzhan-Khem lakes, including Green Lake, and the Choigan mineral springs. The water outlets among mountain forest make an interesting place for quiet observation; bath operation, accommodation and bathing access remain unconfirmed. Beyond Choigan-Daban, the route ends in the upper Dunda-Gol area on an unfinished approach towards Dovurak. A prepared departure from that final location is absent. The historical expedition was interrupted by a fatal avalanche involving its leader. Repeating the outing therefore requires a new safe completion plan, review of every mountain stage and prepared backup exits. This version does not reach the Valley of Volcanoes. Explore its places within the prepared group’s abilities, retaining the option to turn back before an unsafe continuation.

For the changing Sayan landscape: the Tissa and Khelgin valleys, lakes below Topografov Peak, the Arzhan-Khem pass country and Choigan springs among forest. The opening circuit explores the Turgen-Gol area and 23 February Pass. Selecting individually prepared stages allows a closer acquaintance with these places without a commitment to repeat the whole historical journey.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
Without a car - Hard With children - No With a dog - No data By bike - No With a stroller - No Mobile signal - No data For an experienced self-sufficient ski group with mountain and avalanche skills and preparation for ice and glacier terrain. This winter expedition includes mountain outings on foot and has no confirmed maintained recreational ski trail. A new safe ending, backup exits and communication for remote valleys are essential. It is unsuitable for a first winter expedition or a family holiday with children. Suitability with a dog and reliable mobile coverage are unestablished.

Nearby

Shutkhulay-Nur on the Tissa lies near the departure side. The lake with the same name on the Shutkhulay River is a different location. An old winter hut and earlier help from local residents do not establish current accommodation. Munku-Sasan appears in the opening mountain area, but its summit was not reached in this version. Continuing along its ridge requires an independent mountaineering decision. Soedinitelny Pass is associated with the return from the Khorin-Gol towards the Khokhyur-Zhalga. The present permitted descent and bypasses around river steps need separate checks. The Valley of Volcanoes and the Peretolchin and Kropotkin volcanoes belong to a separate onward journey; this version does not reach them. Waterfall steps on the Turgen-Gol, Khokhyur-Zhalga and Khelgin are documented in the primary account, but their frozen appearance and access to each pool depend on current conditions. Choigan springs are not a confirmed treatment programme, food service or supplied overnight stop.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Direct public transport to the Tissa departure location and from the final Dunda-Gol area is unconfirmed. Orlik can be a side from which to arrange the onward approach, but transport for people, skis and expedition supplies to the river start needs separate agreement. Prepare your own safe exit from the mountains and onward return before buying tickets. The endpoint of this version is neither a settlement nor a transport stop.
By car
Arrange the vehicle stage from the Orlik side, then separately confirm permitted access towards Shutkhulay-Nur on the Tissa. Check road diversions, snow, ice overflow and suitability for the actual vehicle with local drivers. The earlier expedition’s UAZ transfer does not establish present access. Vehicle marks on a river do not establish safe ice. A vehicle departure from the upper Dunda-Gol area is unestablished, so prepare the complete return arrangement before starting.
Parking
Parking is unconfirmed. Agree vehicle and luggage storage with the receiving party before the approach. Vehicle-storage arrangements at the Tissa winter hut are unestablished. River ice and flood-prone banks are unsuitable places to leave a car.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainДанные по набору высоты уточняются.
SurfaceТип покрытия пока не определён.
Риски The primary account records a fatal avalanche on the unfinished approach towards Dovurak. Historical passage does not confirm a safe repeat. The leader must prepare a new plan, assess current avalanche conditions, establish a safe ending and organise backup exits. Do not attempt the complete version without those decisions. The Tissa, Turgen-Gol, Khokhyur-Zhalga and Khelgin valleys include ice overflow, openings in the ice, open pools and river steps. Snow hides water and ice edges. Choose shore bypasses independently, organise appropriate safety cover and avoid unverified crossings. Earlier group passage does not make winter lake ice safe either. Passes add wind-deposited snow, avalanche slopes, cornices and loss of visibility. Topografov Peak adds glacier and rocky terrain where ski experience cannot replace mountain skills. Avoid cornices and do not automatically repeat the old ascent line. Leave the summit outing and onward crossing out if a safe option is unestablished. Choigan is not a guaranteed warm shelter. Beyond the upper Dunda-Gol, there is no confirmed prepared exit towards a road or assistance. Before travelling, check access conditions for the specific itinerary through Buryatia and Tuva, including border-zone rules wherever they apply.

How much time to allow

Расчётное время в пути 1 d 3 h
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
A multi-day plan by individual day is unestablished, and the full time for this exact version is also unestablished. The schedule of an unfinished historical expedition is not a timetable for a new outing. Plan acclimatisation, the opening circuit, shore bypasses, any summit outing, the Choigan crossing and your prepared safe exit separately. Allow reserve time for weather, changing snow and cancellation of a high stage. Confirm overnight places, water and fuel reserves within the new plan. Register the route with EMERCOM and agree check-in messages and confirmation of return.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Winter conditions suitable for the prepared group after a current assessment of snow, avalanche hazards and river ice. Previous February or March passage does not automatically make those months safe. Fresh drifting snow, warming, open water and poor visibility can require waiting, turning back or cancelling a reach. A summer repeat of the entire winter layout is unconfirmed; river steps, the glacier and banks require a separate itinerary.
