Route description

From Sukhoye Ruslo, the route crosses Khubutsky Pass into the inner valleys of the Tunka mountains. The wooded approach gives way to the Arkhat and Yaman-Gol, before Obzorny opens the direction towards Narin-Gol and Shumak. River narrows alternate with broader valleys, and a side visit to the springs brings a well-known mountain destination into a substantial independent journey. Beyond Shumak, the character changes. The Perevalnaya lakes, Vetreny, the high Baikonur plateau and upper Right Bilyuta form a demanding succession of mountain landscapes. The final Bepkan–Dinozavr combination leads towards Zun-Khandagay and the southern foothills. This version finishes south of Arshan; reaching the village itself needs a separate arrangement. The variety is the attraction, while independent mountain skills and readiness to change plans for water and weather are essential.

Route at a glance

Главное за минуту
Combine two contrasting sides of the Tunka range: the river canyons of the old Shumak direction and the high lake valleys of the Bilyuta. Obzorny, Vetreny, Baikonur and the exit through Dinozavr give the journey several distinct mountain perspectives.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
Independent multi-day mountain experience, rope protection skills, river assessment and reliable navigation are required. Canyons and rocky pass sections need a competent leader. The terrain is unsuitable for bicycles or strollers. Dog access and reliable reception are unconfirmed.

Nearby

Shumaksky and Snezhny passes are not completed alternative exits in this version. Strelnikov and Dinozavr summits remain separate mountain objectives: Dinozavr Pass does not establish an ascent of the peak. A visit to Arshan after leaving the mountains can be planned separately. Confirm permissions, camp rules and registration for the whole journey; old bridges, camps, huts and spring-area services are not guaranteed to operate.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Public transport to the start is unconfirmed. Arrange arrival in the Nilovka area, separate delivery to Sukhoye Ruslo and completion from the southern finish to Arshan. An old diary establishes no current services. Preserve a return-travel reserve for mountain delays.
By car
Vehicle access to the start is unconfirmed. The historical group used a booked transfer to Sukhoye Ruslo, but present passage and the drop-off require a fresh agreement. Collection lies on the other side of the mountains; the finish does not establish arrival in central Arshan.
Parking
Parking is unconfirmed. Ask where a vehicle may be left for an extended period and how to retrieve it after leaving the mountains on the other side.

What to expect

Places
Khubutsky Pass The first crossing leads from Khubuty into Barom-Gol and introduces the old Shumak direction before the inner-valley journey.
Yaman-Gol Canyons Rock narrows punctuate the river valley. Water and the gorge walls shape the passage, with present river levels determining individual sections.
Obzorny Pass The broad crossing joins Yaman-Gol and Narin-Gol. Clear weather reveals both sides before the descent returns to river country.
Lower Narin-Gol Canyon Rock narrows accompany the descent towards Shumak. River sections alternate with bank alternatives, with walls close to the water shaping the scenery.
Glaza Spring at Shumak One of the named right-bank springs lies on the Shumak side visit. It offers a separate riverside stop before returning to the mountain-pass section.
Perevalnaya Lakes Izumrudnoye and Perevalnoye form a lake step below Vetreny. The route reaches their shores, replacing the wooded Shumak approach with water and rocky cirque walls.
Vetreny Pass The rock-and-scree crossing leads from Perevalnaya to Left Bilyuta. It is a serious mountain stage requiring protection and descent assessment.
Baikonur Pass The high plateau between the two Bilyuta valleys has a lake landscape. Its broad shape contrasts with steeper crossings elsewhere on the journey.
Bepkan Pass The crossing leads from the Right Bilyuta basin to Barun-Khandagay. Lake terraces beyond the stony saddle introduce the final mountain section.
Dinozavr Pass The last pass leads into Zun-Khandagay and turns the journey towards the southern exit. The peak of the same name remains a separate objective.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 9036 м.
SurfaceТип покрытия пока не определён.
Риски The Yaman-Gol and Narin-Gol canyons require bank-route choices and water assessment; an older riverbed passage establishes no safe ford today. Vetreny includes rock drops and a protected descent, with abandoned slings providing no ready protection. Right Bilyuta has difficult boulder deposits and an intermittent path. Bepkan and Dinozavr require assessment of steep ground, scree and possible snow. Verify the connections after the Shumak side visit and along the final road exit separately. Present conditions should determine progress rather than an earlier group’s ability to continue.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 2 d 8 h
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
This is a multi-day mountain journey. A day-by-day plan is not established. Prepare independent stages before and after Shumak, authorised camps and reserves for water, weather and technical passes. The historical outing took almost two weeks, but its night walking and pressured final day provide no ready schedule. Include completion from the southern endpoint to Arshan before setting out.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
This is a summer version, yet the August diary includes wet snow, frost and heavy rain. Choose dates according to river levels, snow on the passes and a stable forecast. The canyon section is particularly sensitive to high water. Confirm the current regime of protected areas involved and newer park notices: the published restriction period through15October2026 has expired, which alone establishes no opening of every passage.

What to bring
