Route description

Shumak springs and a crossing of Shumak Pass combine a mountain-valley visit with a walking exit to the southern Tunkinsky side. Plan the local spring-side walk and the longer crossing to the road separately, with their own approach and return arrangements. Around the confluence of the Right and Left Shumak, mineral water emerges on different banks. The water outlets and river terraces make interesting places to observe respectfully. Spring names do not promise treatment, while bathing and bath operation require separate confirmation. The walking stage starts on the Shumak riverbank side and climbs along the Left Shumak. A forest path gradually leads towards the Shumak Waterfall viewing side and then into rocky mountain country. Shumak Pass forms the main connection between the valleys. In good weather, the setting changes from wooded banks to open pass country and the descent towards the Ekhe-Ger. Neighbouring summit ascents are separate outings. Forest returns on the southern descent towards the Nilova Pustyn road side. The walking crossing ends where a forest road meets the approach road; arrange onward departure there in advance. A return walk from that southern road to the springs is unprepared in this version. The local Shumak walk needs its own plan and does not replace a return through the mountains. The outing suits travellers prepared to assess the pass carefully, view the waterfall side and visit the springs within confirmed access conditions.

Route at a glance

Главное за минуту
See the Left Shumak valley change from terraces by the springs through wooded river country to the waterfall side and open pass landscape. The Ekhe-Ger descent reveals another side of the Tunkinsky mountains. A separately planned local walk leaves time for the spring area without forcing it into a demanding crossing day.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
Without a car - Hard With children - No With a dog - With caution By bike - No With a stroller - No Mobile signal - No data For a physically prepared walking group with experience of mountain crossings, self-sufficient overnight stops and snow assessment. Arrange the separate approach to the Shumak start and departure from the southern road. The local spring walk differs greatly in effort from the full crossing, but its bank connections also need checks. Participation with a dog requires review of the entire course and readiness for water and mountain terrain; national-park leash rules apply. The complete version is unsuitable for young children. Reliable mobile reception throughout is unestablished.

Nearby

The named Eyes, Radon and Selenium water outlets lie near the local Shumak bank side. Confirm present access to each outlet, bath condition and any bathing separately. Names and old accounts do not establish treatment advice. Nogon-Nur Lake lies off the main pass approach. Visiting the full lake and reaching its shore need separate checks. Marble Waterfall is also separate from the main local walk and pass crossing. The Khuukhein-Khada pillars lie farther down the Shumak valley and require an independent outing. Three Captains Peak and neighbouring summits are separate mountain objectives. Returning over Arshansky Pass is another independently planned journey. Nilova Pustyn is a side for organising onward departure and a separate resort-valley visit. Agree any lodge, bath, meal or accommodation arrangements at Shumak and on the southern side in advance. Historical summer-cabin information does not confirm present services.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Direct public transport to the Shumak spring-side start is unconfirmed. Arrange the valley approach as a separate journey or an independently agreed transfer. On the southern Nilova Pustyn road side, confirm a meeting point, group transport and onward connections. The local spring walk needs its own return arrangement; finishing the crossing at a road does not automatically bring you back to Shumak.
By car
Arrange a vehicle meeting on the southern road side from Nilova Pustyn. The crossing ends where a forest road meets the approach road; confirm present access for the actual vehicle and a permitted stopping place in advance. Vehicle access to the Shumak start is unestablished. Vehicle storage must account for the separate mountain-valley approach and return after the local walk.
Parking
Parking is unconfirmed. Agree vehicle storage before entering the mountains and pickup after the southern descent in advance. The final road junction is not evidence of an equipped parking place. Choose a permitted place away from vehicle passage and flood-prone banks.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 1527 м.
SurfaceТип покрытия пока не определён.
Риски The opening bank path may be overgrown and boggy. Water connections lie nearby; a mapped ford or neighbouring small bridge does not establish safe passage now. Inspect the bank and crossing state, avoiding high water. Limit the local walk to an accessible side or postpone it if a permitted connection is unestablished. The Left Shumak approach includes rocks, wet ground and places where the path becomes unclear. View the waterfall from a permitted path side rather than assuming access to its pool or cliff edges. The pass and nearby slopes require assessment of snow, ice, loose rock, cornices and avalanche conditions. Turn back before the pass when visibility or snow conditions are unsuitable. Keep to the prepared path and permitted river connections in the Ekhe-Ger valley. A complete return crossing from the southern road to the springs is not included as a prepared loop. Arrange the separate parts’ starts, endings and backup exits beforehand. Obtain permission for the Tunkinsky National Park stages and confirm present access. Check conditions for the spring area separately. Running Deer hut and other cabins are not guaranteed warm shelters.

How much time to allow

Расчётное время в пути 14 h 31 min
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
A multi-day plan by individual day is unestablished, and the full time for this exact version is also unestablished. Plan the approach to Shumak, the local spring-area visit and crossing to the southern road separately. Reserve time for path conditions, water crossings, snow, weather and a delayed departure. Confirm overnight places and water availability in advance; an old cabin is not supplied accommodation. The duration of a standard Nilova Pustyn-to-springs walk does not establish a timetable for these separate parts. Register the mountain route with EMERCOM and agree check-in messages and confirmation of return.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Summer conditions after checking pass snow, river levels and permitted access. Primary accounts describe July and August as the busiest walking period, while snow can arrive even in late summer. Early-season snow on the pass may make the crossing substantially harder. Recheck fords and shore bypasses after heavy rain. Winter passage needs an independent mountain and avalanche plan and is not a routine extension of the summer path.
