Route description

The walk from Sukhoy Ruchey towards Shumak offers a substantial change of scenery. Forest roads fall behind, the Ekhe-Ger valley opens out, and Shumaksky Pass carries the journey across the mountains. Beyond the pass, the path runs above Lake Nogon-Nur and descends towards the Left Shumak waterfall before returning to taiga. This version finishes beside the Shumak River near the tourist base. It is a one-way mountain hike, so planning the return matters as much as reaching the valley. Mineral springs lie in the destination area, but visiting individual springs requires a separate local continuation. Summer conditions still involve steep ground, cold water and the possibility of waiting out poor weather.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
Experience of multi-day walking with a loaded pack, steep descents and river assessment is needed. This version is unsuitable as an ordinary children’s outing, bicycle ride or stroller walk. Dog access over the complete journey and dependable valley reception are unconfirmed.

Nearby

Visiting individual mineral springs after the finish, Marble Creek, the Emerald Lakes and Khuukhein-Khada requires separate local planning. None is automatically included. Confirm permission for the complete crossing, Tunka National Park rules and the separate Shumak Nature Park arrangements. Treat the springs as a natural feature; this guide gives no treatment, mineral-water drinking or bathing instructions.

Getting there

What to expect

Places
Shumaksky Pass The mountain crossing between the Ekhe-Ger and Left Shumak valleys opens out in clear weather. Its steep descent requires attention to stone, snow and weather.
Lake Nogon-Nur (view from the path) The mountain lake lies below the pass descent. This version passes above its shore, offering a view from the path rather than an included descent to the water.
Left Shumak waterfall (view from the route) A waterfall view on the descent into the wooded valley. The encounter is from the walking path; reaching its base or other waterfalls requires separate planning.
Shumak River at the finish The mountain river lies beside the final section and tourist base. The crossing finishes here; visiting individual mineral springs is an additional local plan.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 1869 м.
SurfaceТип покрытия пока не определён.
Риски Junctions need attention on the lower forest roads. Higher up, scree, loose stones and the steep pass descent become significant; wet slabs or residual snow add difficulty. Rain can make river crossings dangerous, especially the Left Shumak near the finish. Neither an old cable nor a familiar ford establishes safe passage. Allow for stopping and waiting for acceptable conditions.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 15 h 35 min
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
This is a multi-day one-way crossing. A day-by-day plan is not established. Divide it into stages with authorised overnight arrangements, allowing separately for the pass day and delays caused by water or weather. Spring visits, time in the valley and the complete return are additional. Older huts establish no available or usable accommodation, so carry independent camping equipment.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Choose a summer snow-free window according to pass conditions, rivers and permitted access. Cold, snow and sudden loss of visibility remain possible in warmer months. Autumn requires a separate assessment. Winter travel has a different character and cannot simply replace the summer walk. Check new restrictions before departure: the published national-park closure ran through15October2026; subsequent access needs confirmation.

What to bring
