Route description

These are two separate mountain outings from the Oka: an ascent of Khoyto-Ula through the Sailag valley and a climb onto the Shitsky Ridge from the Khultsai side. Each has its own riverbank approach and return. Connecting the outings requires independent arrangements; a continuous walking link is unestablished. In the original journey, paddling connected them, and that river stage is outside these mountain outings. Khoyto-Ula starts above the broad Oka valley. The Sailag approach follows larch woodland and stony floodplain before turning, beyond the Shakhas, onto the ridge between the valleys. Forest gives way to a shelf of rocky outcrops, then a slope of large stones. A cairn recorded in firsthand observations stands before the main summit. Khoyto-Ula, a summit of the Kropotkin Range, is the principal objective. Views of valleys and neighbouring rocky ridges depend on cloud: even a summer ascent can end in fog and strong wind. The return leads back towards the Oka on the Sailag side. The other outing begins on the Oka’s left bank before the Khultsai. Dense forest initially conceals the mountains, which gradually open through larch and Siberian pine. The ascent follows a spur of the Shitsky Ridge to the edge of a long open crest. Clear weather reveals its rocky western part and the Oka’s bends below. The distant end with a survey pyramid is outside the selected outing. Return to the original riverbank. Prepare weather assessment, a safe turnaround and onward departure for each excursion independently.

Route at a glance

Главное за минуту
For two different perspectives on the Oka. Khoyto-Ula provides a mountain objective above Sailag, moving from larch floodplain to stone slopes and a summit. The Shitsky outing reveals the river from another side, first through woodland openings and then from an open crest beside the ridge’s rocky section. Prepare them as separate tasks, omitting the summit or upper crest when conditions are unsuitable.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
Without a car - Hard With children - No With a dog - No data By bike - No With a stroller - No Mobile signal - No data For an experienced self-sufficient walking group with mountain skills, confidence on large stones and navigation beyond consistently distinct paths. Reserve strength independently for Khoyto-Ula and the return from the Shitsky crest. This version is unsuitable for a family introduction to the mountains. Permission with a dog, mobile reception throughout and assistance at the riverbank approaches are unestablished.

Nearby

The author describes a waterfall above the Sailag bridge. Its precise present viewing place and permitted approach are independently unestablished. Check them separately if interested, without replacing viewing with entry into the water. Khoyto-Oka and neighbouring rocky ridges are separate mountain objectives. Buda-Khanda, the Olon-Nur lakes and the Valley of Volcanoes belonged to the broader original journey, but are outside these two excursions. The distant survey pyramid visible along the Shitsky crest is outside the selected visit. Do not automatically continue towards it. Khultsai identifies the neighbouring valley; the riverbank outing begins before its mouth area. Zhombolok, Orkho-Bom, Melnitsa Rapid and onward paddling to Verkhneokinsky belong to an independent river journey. Recheck overnight arrangements, riverbank supplies, any water connection between the outings and subsequent departure. Orlik can be a regional organising side, but actual services and agreements need confirmation.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Direct public transport to both riverbank starts is unconfirmed. Arrange travel to the Sailag side and the separate outing before the Khultsai independently, including return after each climb. Confirm regional arrangements from the Orlik side and onward delivery in advance. The earlier paddling connection and subsequent departure from Verkhneokinsky do not provide a present public transport plan for these excursions.
By car
Check approach towards the Khoyto-Ula start from the Oka valley for the actual vehicle and present road conditions. A riverbank approach does not establish a vehicle meeting point. The Shitsky outing before the Khultsai needs separate permitted delivery and departure; vehicle access to that left bank is unestablished. Do not assume both starts can be connected by driving beside the river without independently checking roads, crossings and access.
Parking
Parking is unconfirmed. Agree vehicle storage and a meeting point after each mountain outing before travelling. Earlier riverside rest places do not establish permitted vehicle parking. Avoid leaving a vehicle on floodplain, paths or ground required for local passage.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 4107 м.
SurfaceТип покрытия пока не определён.
Риски The Sailag side includes stony floodplain, local paths and river crossings. Beyond the Shakhas, leave the main valley path for the dividing ridge. Rocky outcrops, large unstable stones and Khoyto-Ula’s upper slope require mountain experience. Set a weather window and turnaround time before climbing. Fog can conceal the return direction, while strong wind rapidly cools the summit. Earlier summer passage does not establish present snow conditions or safe stream crossings. The Shitsky ascent starts in dense forest on a spur between the Oka and Khultsai. Indistinct paths, vegetation and steep lateral slopes complicate navigation. The open upper crest drops sharply towards the neighbouring valley; avoid its edges in fog or strong wind. Heat, insects and thunderstorms can also alter the plan. Returning to the river must remain a manageable task in its own right. A walking connection between the outings is unconfirmed. Attempt both only with separately prepared permitted delivery and departure, or choose one independent excursion. Do not replace an unknown connection with travel on the water, unconfirmed crossings or slopes above the Oka.

How much time to allow

Расчётное время в пути 21 h 58 min

The full time and a daily plan for a new multi-day journey are unestablished. Prepare the outing from the Oka through Sailag to Khoyto-Ula and return to its riverbank first; arrange separate delivery to the Khultsai side, then the Shitsky crest ascent and descent to that bank. This is a preparation sequence, not confirmed daily timing. Either upper section can be omitted in unsuitable weather. Agree overnight places, water, return delivery, a weather reserve and early departure before travelling. Register the mountain journey with EMERCOM and arrange check-in messages and confirmation of return.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Summer conditions after independently checking snow, streams and ridge approaches. Firsthand observations describe August outings, but their weather cannot be assumed: Khoyto-Ula had cloud and cold wind, while the Shitsky Ridge had heat, insects and a later thunderstorm. Choose a stable forecast and allow for turning back. Reassess stones, floodplain and overgrown slopes after rain. A complete winter repeat is unverified and needs separate mountain and avalanche preparation.
