Route description

The walk from Khutel over Dede-Khutel to Olon-Nur opens a journey linking the Valley of Volcanoes with mountain outings above the Zhombolok. The first stage crosses wooded pass country towards lakes bordered by fractured lava and larch. A longer mountain circuit starts here and returns to Olon-Nur. It takes in Terok-Nur Lake, the Zun-Khadarus valley and the Zun-Kadyr-Os ridge summit, with the Topografov area visible in clear weather. Descending towards the Valley of Volcanoes changes the setting. Among lava formations, the rim of Peretolchin Volcano is a particular attraction. Primary observations record a view of Kropotkin Volcano from this side; climbing that neighbouring cone is a separate outing. Atkinson Meadow is a named landmark near the volcanic stage, although proximity does not establish an equipped camp or available accommodation. The journey then turns towards Buda-Khanda. This version selects a steep rocky rib and unstable stone slopes, requiring mountain experience and a present assessment. In good visibility, the summit reveals Khara-Nur and neighbouring valleys. After returning from Buda-Khanda, the route follows the Sagan-Shuluta side towards a long open ridge, descends loose slopes towards Terok-Nur and returns to Olon-Nur. The circuit finishes by the lakes, rather than back at Khutel. Prepare the lake-side exit and onward departure separately. Shorten or omit the mountain branch if a safe ascent, descent or river connection is unconfirmed.

Route at a glance

Главное за минуту
For three neighbouring Sayan landscapes: the Olon-Nur lakes, the lava terrain of the Valley of Volcanoes and open mountain ridges. Peretolchin offers a look at a volcanic crater from a permitted rim approach, while Buda-Khanda reveals Khara-Nur in suitable visibility. Returning by another mountain way provides changing valleys rather than repeating one path.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
Without a car - Hard With children - No With a dog - No data By bike - No With a stroller - No Mobile signal - No data For an experienced self-sufficient walking group with mountain skills and preparation for a rocky rib, unstable scree and snow patches. Reserve strength for the ridge beyond Buda-Khanda and the return to the lakes. This is unsuitable for a first mountain outing or a family walk with children. Suitability with a dog for the complete course is unestablished. Mobile reception, assistance and supplied accommodation are unconfirmed.

Nearby

Kropotkin Volcano can be seen from the Peretolchin area, but visiting it requires a separate branch. Entering any crater is not automatically included in exterior rim viewing. Check geocaching locations, any active caches and approaches to individual volcanoes independently. Khara-Nur and Bursagay-Nur belong to separate lakeside outings; a ridge view is not a shore visit. Topografov, Khoyto-Ula, Sharlayn-Sardag and other neighbouring summits are separate mountain objectives. Streams near the volcanic stage and upper lakes may have waterfall steps requiring independently permitted viewing approaches. Malysh Waterfall, a Zhombolok descent and continuation along the Oka belong to other itineraries. Historical paddling successes do not describe the conditions of this walking circuit. Orlik is a side from which to organise regional travel. Agree accommodation, luggage transport, vehicle storage and local assistance in advance. Earlier camps at Olon-Nur and Sagan-Shuluta do not establish presently permitted overnight places.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Direct public transport to Khutel and from Olon-Nur is unconfirmed. Arrange regional travel and onward transport for people and self-sufficient supplies from the Orlik side separately. Agree departure from the lakes, the approach to transport and a backup arrangement before setting out. Completing the mountain circuit at Olon-Nur does not automatically return the group to Khutel’s vehicle side.
By car
Arrange the approach towards Khutel through Orlik, confirming road state and permitted access for the actual vehicle. Earlier truck journeys and reports of a road towards Olon-Nur do not establish present access. The walking start and final bank are different places. Prepare the meeting point after the lake return and any remaining approach to it separately; do not assume the entire shore is accessible by vehicle.
Parking
Parking is unconfirmed. Agree vehicle storage during the approach and mountain circuit with the receiving party in advance. Check stopping at Khutel, any vehicle location near the lakes and luggage transfer separately. Avoid leaving a vehicle on a path, flood-prone bank or ground needed for local passage.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainДанные по набору высоты уточняются.
SurfaceТип покрытия пока не определён.
Риски The Khutel approach includes a steep climb to a forest terrace, wet ground and stream crossings. Lava fields add deep cracks and awkward bypasses; keep to a prepared path rather than entering unexamined gaps. Check the actual small bridges and river connections near Olon-Nur. Earlier summer passage does not establish present crossing conditions. The Terok-Nur and Zun-Khadarus side needs attention to water, boggy ground, snow patches and orientation. Zun-Kadyr-Os and the descent towards the Valley of Volcanoes involve mountain terrain without a consistently clear confirmed path. Avoid guessing shortcuts through narrow gullies or rocky steps. This Buda-Khanda ascent follows a steep rocky rib with unstable blocks. Mountain skills, rock assessment and safety arrangements selected by the leader are necessary. A gentler neighbouring bench approach is another branch and cannot automatically stand in for this one. Leave the summit outside the outing if the selected ascent or descent does not suit the group. Beyond Buda-Khanda, the Sagan-Shuluta side, a long exposed ridge, snow patches and a steep scree descent towards Terok-Nur remain. Fog may hide cliffs. Avoid entering snow or loose ground above an unverified continuation. Prepare a separate permitted bypass, turn back or shorten the mountain stage if a safe descent or river connection is absent.

How much time to allow

A multi-day plan by individual day for a new journey is unestablished, and the full time for this exact version is also unestablished. Prepare its separate tasks: the Khutel-to-Olon-Nur approach, the Terok-Nur and Zun-Kadyr-Os crossing towards the volcanic stage, the Buda-Khanda branch and the ridge return to the lakes. This is a preparation sequence rather than confirmed daily timing. Arrange the Olon-Nur departure, a weather reserve and an option to omit the summit separately. Confirm overnight places, water and permitted camping before travelling. Register the mountain route with EMERCOM and agree check-in messages and confirmation of return.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Summer conditions when pass approaches, river connections and snow patches have been checked and suit the prepared group. Earlier summer outings do not guarantee the same water or snow in another year. Thunderstorms, fog and strong winds matter particularly on exposed ridges. Reassess rocky slopes, crossings and the Terok-Nur descent after rain. A complete winter repeat is unverified and needs an independent avalanche and mountain plan.
