Route description

Zhombolok rapids and selected Oka reaches form a Sayan water journey with two distinct river characters. The opening stage follows the Zhombolok below the Olon-Nur lakes. Narrow passages among rocks lead through the S-shaped rapids towards Billiard and Vint. Shore inspection is part of the appeal: it reveals how the channel threads between obstacles and how the flow changes around each turn. Catapult, Touch Me Not and the left branch of Variant give the next reach its particular rhythm. Each obstacle needs inspection and organised safety cover before a decision to run or portage. Below Sharza, wooded banks and branching channels take over. Paddler Delight riffle adds another named landmark, although fallen timber and bridges still need close attention. At the Zhombolok confluence, the confined tributary gives way to the wider Oka. This version then includes separate Oka stages near the mouths of the Urda-Oka and Bolshaya Slyuda. The final location is on the left bank of the Oka before Dandar-Gol; the journey does not reach Verkhneokinsky. Connections between stages, shore portages and onward departure must be prepared with an experienced leader. A complete continuous permitted connection has not been confirmed. Choose an individually arranged river stage if the connections or exit are unprepared. The outing suits a group seeking a close look at the Zhombolok’s named obstacles and remote Oka banks, with the freedom to leave an unsuitable reach out of the plan.

Route at a glance

Главное за минуту
Explore the Zhombolok through its own landmarks: the S-shaped rapids, Billiard, Vint, Catapult and Touch Me Not. Rocky passages give way to channels near Sharza and then to the Oka and its Sayan tributaries. Shore inspections make the river’s shape easier to understand while leaving room to choose portages that fit the group.

Route suitability

Кому будет комфортно
Without a car - Hard With children - No With a dog - No data By bike - No With a stroller - No Mobile signal - No data For an experienced self-sufficient river group whose leader can assess rapids and organise shore safety and portages. Connections between river stages and departure from the Oka need advance preparation. This version is unsuitable for a first paddling outing, a basic recreational boat or an independent family holiday. Suitability with a dog is unverified. Reliable reception and prompt assistance along all banks are unconfirmed.

Nearby

The Olon-Nur lakes lie near the upper Zhombolok side. A full lake circuit, cave approaches and mountain side trips are separate outings. Maly Zhombolok Waterfall is associated with a side channel near the Oka. It needs an independently confirmed permitted shore approach. Passing nearby in a boat does not establish access or a guaranteed view of the falling water. Exiting beside undercut or high banks needs particular care. Obtoy riffle, Orkho-Bom canyon and the famous rapids of a longer Oka descent cannot automatically be added to these separate stages. A complete journey through them needs its own review of river and shore conditions. A climb towards the Shitsky base and mountain is a separate land outing. Verkhneokinsky lies beyond the final bank before Dandar-Gol; driving or paddling there is not a prepared part of this version.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Direct public transport to the river departure point or from the final bank before Dandar-Gol is unconfirmed. Arrange transport for people and boats towards the Zhombolok separately. Reaching Orlik does not mean reaching the launch shore. Confirm departure from the remote Oka bank, permitted ground access and a backup exit before setting out. Public transport from Verkhneokinsky does not solve the return from this particular endpoint.
By car
Orlik can serve as a side from which to organise the onward approach towards the Zhombolok. Agree boat transport, a permitted unloading point and the remaining shore approach with local drivers and the group leader. Vehicle access directly to the opening river location is unconfirmed. The Oka endpoint before Dandar-Gol needs its own departure arrangement: road access, usable shore access and permitted onward travel remain unverified. An arrangement based simply on leaving a car at the start and retrieving it at the end is insufficient.
Parking
Parking is unconfirmed. Agree vehicle storage during the river journey and any boat-transfer location in advance. Choose a permitted place away from flood-prone ground and vehicle passage. A former river camp is not evidence of a parking place.

What to expect

Places
Rapid 39 a named opening landmark on the Zhombolok stage.
First S-shaped rapid a turning passage through the rocky Zhombolok channel.
Second S-shaped rapid the next named obstacle in the same river group.
Rapid 42 a rocky passage before Billiard.
Billiard rapid an obstacle among large rocks, also called Bobsleigh in the author’s account.
Rapid 44 a named landmark between Billiard and Vint.
Vint rapid a Zhombolok obstacle before the Catapult area.
Catapult rapid a separate obstacle requiring shore inspection and a choice between running and portaging.
Touch Me Not rapid a turning rapid for which advance inspection is particularly important.
Variant left branch the selected side of a divided Zhombolok channel.
Sharza riffle a named river reach on the way to the lower Zhombolok.
Paddler Delight riffle a lower-river landmark before the Oka.
Confluence of the Zhombolok and Oka the change from the confined tributary to the wider river.
Urda-Oka mouth a Sayan tributary confluence on one of the separate Oka stages.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 20 м.
SurfaceТип покрытия пока не определён.
Риски Inspect every named rapid on the upper Zhombolok from an accessible bank. Rocks, pinning hazards, recirculating water and the position of current lines change with the level. A successful earlier descent does not establish a usable line now. Prepare Catapult and Touch Me Not separately, deciding on portages before entering. The selected Variant reach is its left branch, whose suitability also needs inspection. Bridges, low structures and fallen timber can block channels. Avoid uninspected bridge passages and do not enter a timber blockage expecting to find an exit. An accessible bank, a permitted portage and an earlier end to the stage must remain possible. Lower-Zhombolok shore portages may be more demanding than the water obstacles. A complete permitted connection between the separate Oka stages is unestablished. Direct continuation by water or carrying along an arbitrary bank is not a prepared solution. Intervening river reaches need their own full planning and current inspection; select an individual stage if that preparation is absent. Confirm the final bank before Dandar-Gol, backup communication and departure arrangements before setting out.

How much time to allow

Оцените свой темп
Расчётное время в пути 9 h 37 min
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
A multi-day plan by individual day is unestablished, and the full time for this exact version is also unestablished. Prepare the schedule after confirming all stage connections, portages and departure from the Oka. Allow separate time for shore inspections, safety cover, carrying boats and changing weather. Choose camps and backup endpoints according to permitted shore access and current water; former camps do not guarantee suitable ground now. Register the river route with EMERCOM and agree check-in messages and confirmation of departure. Continuing to Verkhneokinsky requires a separate route and its own timing.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Open-water conditions when the actual level, forecast, obstacle visibility and shore state suit the prepared group. Earlier summer descents do not guarantee the same water in another year. Review both the assessment and plan after heavy rain, rising levels or changes in timber blockages. Cold water and chilly shore stops remain possible in summer. Winter ice travel is unverified for this water journey.
