Route description

The approach from Arshan to Shumak via the Kitoy reveals the Tunkinskiye Goltsy gradually. The Kyngarga and rocky landmarks above its gorge shape the opening section. Arshan then falls behind as Arshanskiy Pass carries the journey into the valley of Fedyushkina River. Rivers define the days beyond. The route reaches the Kitoy, follows its valley and continues along the Shumak towards the mineral springs area. Riverbanks, woodland passages and the pass itself become as much a part of the experience as the destination. This option is for a prepared, self-sufficient mountain journey. It approaches through Arshanskiy Pass and the Kitoy valley; the well-known approach over Shumakskiy Pass is a different route. Leave additional time to explore the Shumak area after arriving, with accommodation and an exit from the mountains arranged in advance.

Nearby

Shumak mineral springs are near the finish, but individual bathing facilities and named springs require additional approaches. Their presence is not a medical recommendation. Arrange accommodation and services beforehand. Huheyn-Hada and the First Kyngarga Waterfall are not included as separate visits. Returning via Shumakskiy Pass is an independent continuation requiring its own plan.

Getting there

Варианты и важные моменты Show on map
Without a car
Bus connections link Irkutsk with Arshan; confirm the current service and arrival point. Arshan Bus Ticket Office Stop is separate from the walking start. No ordinary bus service is confirmed at the Shumak finish. Plan your return mountain walk or another specifically arranged exit before setting out.
By car
Plan road access only to Arshan using permitted village roads, then continue on foot. No verified through-road reaches the finish. If leaving a car in Arshan, decide in advance how you will return to it after visiting Shumak.
Parking
Paid parking is mapped by Arshan’s resort park. Ask the operator about leaving a vehicle for several days and any storage arrangements; ordinary parking payment does not establish permission for an extended stay. No car parking is confirmed at the finish.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainСуммарный набор высоты — 1245 м.
SurfaceТип покрытия пока не определён.
Риски Experience in self-sufficient mountain travel, navigation and assessing river crossings is needed. Arshanskiy Pass has a steep grassy and scree descent, with avalanche danger when snow is present. Rivers and streams cross the route; mapped bridges do not establish their present condition. Some path sections need clarification. If permitted, passable access is not confirmed, postpone or choose another prepared option. Obtain Tunkinsky park permission, establish current Shumak access requirements with Burpriroda and agree overnight locations. Nadezhda Shelter is not guaranteed accommodation.

How much time to allow

Расчётное время в пути 21 h 3 min
С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
A day-by-day plan for the multi-day outing is not established. The author gives 3–4 days for prepared groups, but this historical indication is not a verified current schedule. Build stages around permitted overnight locations, crossings, weather reserves and an exit plan. Exploring the springs and returning require additional time.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
The author identifies July and August as the usual summer season. Even then, consider prolonged rain, river levels and mountain snow. Avalanche danger can affect the pass from November to May; winter travel requires a separate plan and assessment. Check restrictions in both protected areas before departure.
