Route description

An old route associated with summer mountain pastures leads towards the Chertolen-Gorkhon. It begins as a lower road before becoming a woodland path once used to move livestock. This is a gradual introduction to the Tunka mountains, shaped by the forest ascent and the growing presence of a mountain river. The upper end of this approach reaches the Chertolen-Gorkhon itself. Pause for the river setting and the change in the valley as the lower roads fall behind. Mountain passes and neighbouring gorges lie beyond this version. Choose it for an independent walk with enough energy for the return, after checking the path’s current condition and permitted access.

Route suitability

This independent mountain approach and return require stamina and careful navigation. It is unsuitable as a short children’s outing. Cycling passage, dog-access conditions and dependable mobile reception are unconfirmed.

Nearby

Pervomaysky Pass, crossings towards Shuntyn-Gorkhon and the Arkhat lakes belong to separate mountain journeys. They are outside this river approach. Check permitted access with Tunka National Park before travelling. Historical use for livestock establishes no current tourist maintenance, campsite permission or maintained crossings.

Getting there

Show on map

What to expect

Places
Chertolen-Gorkhon River (upper end of the approach) — The mountain river reached by the woodland approach is this outing’s destination. Neighbouring passes and lakes require another journey. Assess the water level and safe access to the river on arrival.

Difficult sections and safety

Elevation gain
Woodland junctions and the change from road to path require attention. Continuous passage over the approach is unconfirmed at present. Convenient water may be unavailable until the upper river encounter in dry conditions, so carry an adequate supply. Older accounts of stepping stones and logs establish no present crossing. Turn back from unsafe high water.

How much time to allow

Set off early and keep ample daylight for the return. A verified duration for the complete outing is not established. The upper river encounter is a decision point for returning rather than an automatically included start to a mountain-pass crossing. Add the walk from your drop-off and the complete return to the plan.

Best time to go

The outing is primarily a snow-free approach. Choose dates according to path conditions, water levels and forecasts; rain can substantially change the ground and river margins. In dry weather, carrying drinking water becomes especially important. A winter version and regular trail preparation are unconfirmed.

What to bring

Drinking water until a confirmed refill and for the return.
