Route description

The left-bank hillside above the Middle Irkut offers a view into the valley and an approach to Nukhu-Daban from the mountain side. Woodland, the river’s bends and an old hunters’ path give the walk its character. The interest lies in moving gradually from the river valley towards the rocky pass area. At Nukhu-Daban, a natural opening in the rock marks a distinctive feature of the old mountain passage. Allow time to examine the surrounding slope without rushing towards the edge. This version starts already within the Middle Irkut valley; reaching it and returning to the road require separate preparation.

Independent mountain walking experience and reliable navigation are needed. The start is away from the road, and links between the upper sections require preparation. This is unsuitable for an ordinary family stroll, bicycles or strollers. Dog access and reliable reception are unconfirmed.

The lower approach from the White Irkut to Nukhu-Daban is separate and needs its own present-condition check. Munku-Sardyk, Lake Ekhoy, Pryamoy Pass and the ice canyons require independent outings. Confirm border-area rules, documents and permitted directions before travelling; an older description provides no current access permission.

Middle Irkut The mountain river accompanies the valley section. The bank-side direction reveals its setting; riverbed passage and a safe ford are not promised.
Nukhu-Daban The old mountain pass has a natural rock opening near the end of the approach. The landform and old passage meet here; viewing it does not require going through towards the sheer side.

Риски The upper sections are separate, and part of the walk retraces an earlier direction. Establish connections and a safe passage towards Nukhu-Daban before setting out. Wet stone, roots, snow and loss of the path matter on the hillside. Approach the rock opening cautiously: passing through leads towards a sheer side and is not an essential part of the walk. Do not replace the bank path with the riverbed of the lower canyon, whose icefalls form a separate technical outing.
