Route description

The road to Cherikov reveals another side of the Gomel region. Beyond Vetka come Svetilovichi, Babichi and Polesye, followed by the Mogilev region. Small village memorials, Krasnopolye’s commemorative sites and Cherikov’s older buildings tell stories of local people and changing ways of life. Crossings of the Iput, Besed and Sozh link these stops into a substantial journey from Gomel. In Vetka, look for the monument to the first agricultural machinery workers and the excavator beside the northern exit. Polesye brings St Nicholas Church beside the road. Krasnopolye has a succession of memorials along its main street. For a closer introduction to the area, make a separate visit to the history and ethnography museum, with displays on traditional crafts, local theatre and the Chernobyl disaster. Cherikov begins beyond the Sozh bridge. Its Nativity of the Virgin Church occupies a former noble assembly building, while the road towards Slavgorod passes buildings of a former rectification plant. Beyond the Pronya, the route skirts northern Slavgorod and continues through Dovsk to Rogachev, where the Dnieper and Drut follow one another. The return leads through Uritskoye and Pribor to Gomel’s western entrance, finishing in a different part of the city from the start.

Difficult sections and safety

На что обратить внимание
Elevation gainДанные по набору высоты уточняются.
SurfaceAsphalt 63%, Improved surface 17%, Dirt 2%, Unknown 16%.
Риски Long road stages, wind and motor traffic are the main challenges. The M5, the junction at Dovsk and the return via the M10 require particular attention. Confirm that cycling is permitted on each such section and select lawful connections before departure; uninterrupted passage under current conditions has not been established. At Babichi and Pioner, avoid restricted service branches. In Uritskoye, do not use the side footway where bicycles are prohibited. View Cherikov’s historic buildings from public streets. For the eastern part of the journey, check local access arrangements for resettlement territories. Permission is required for areas subject to access controls. Travelling on an ordinary road does not authorise side trips into closed villages or areas marked with restriction signs.

How much time to allow

С запасом на остановки + 30–60 мин
Allow several days, arranging overnight stops along the Krasnopolye direction, around Cherikov and on the return through Rogachev. Confirm accommodation before departure. Reserve separate time for Krasnopolye’s museum and a walk through Cherikov. On the final day, include the onward journey from the western finish to accommodation, the station or your pickup point.

Best time to go

Сезонность и рекомендации
Choose dry conditions without snow or ice. Late spring and early autumn can suit the journey when temperatures are moderate and daylight is sufficient. Carry extra water on open roads in summer and shorten stages in strong winds. After heavy rain, check bridge approaches and stopping places.
